General information

Preparation
Preparation for cystometry includes several stages:
- the day before the procedure, you must take an antibiotic prescribed by your doctor;

Process of cystometry
Before the procedure, you must remove all excess clothing and items that may interfere with the study. The patient is then given about half a liter of water to drink to empty the bladder. During emptying, uroflowmetry is performed, which determines the speed and amount of urine leaving the bladder, and then cystometry is done.
A catheter is inserted into the bladder through the urethra. Then a second catheter is inserted into the rectum (if the procedure is performed on men) or into the vagina if it is performed on women. Then gas or liquid is introduced into the bladder to determine the pressure in it. The entire procedure takes about 40 minutes.
In some cases, cystometry may require the administration of a drug that affects the tone of the bladder muscles.
Indications
Cystometry is indicated:
- for normal or stress urinary incontinence;
- with an increase in the amount of urine or with pollakiuria;
- in cases of insufficient emptying of the bladder during urination;
- with nocturia or frequent night urination (most often occurs in young children);
- with cutting and pain in the bladder without the presence of an inflammatory process in it;
- if there is an urge to urinate without discharge urine.
Contraindications
Contraindications to cystometry are the following cases:
- pregnancy of the patient;
- allergy to medications and anesthesia;
- poor blood clotting;
- serious diseases of the cardiovascular system.
Complications
Usually, the diagnostic procedure does not cause complications. However, deviations are still possible:
- urethral fever;
- chills;
- a small amount of blood during urination;
- a decrease in the amount of urine during urination;
- infection during catheter insertion.
