Prevention After Casual Encounters is a set of measures taken to avoid the development of potential diseases in a person following unprotected sexual contact with a lesser-known partner.

General Information

Unfortunately, casual encounters are an increasingly prevalent issue today. Most teenagers are aware of the need to use condoms as the most effective contraceptive method (in terms of preventing STIs), but statistics show few put this knowledge into practice.

Preventive Measures

As is well known, there’s a solution to every problem—you just need to find it. If you’ve had unprotected sex with a lesser-known partner, there are four ways to prevent disease:

  • Home preventive measures. Immediately after intercourse, wash the genitals or rectum with soap and water. Chlorine-based antiseptics can also be used. Doctors recommend emptying the bladder post-contact. Afterward, over-the-counter medications (e.g., Betadine, Gibitan, Cidipol) can help prevent diseases like syphilis, trichomoniasis, or gonorrhea, but they are effective only if used within two hours of exposure. Note that home prevention doesn’t guarantee protection against STIs.
  • Medical prophylaxis 1–2 days post-exposure is the second option. Based on a venereologist’s examination and risk assessment, strong medications are prescribed to halt disease progression. After 21–30 days, the patient is tested for STIs. Testing immediately after exposure is pointless as no signs are detectable at that stage.
It’s crucial to understand that medical prophylaxis for STIs cannot prevent viral diseases like HIV, genital herpes, or HPV.
  • The final option is visiting a venereologist 21–30 days after the encounter for a full examination to detect any existing STIs.

Given modern medical capabilities, effective treatment of any STI is entirely possible.

Frequency of Preventive Measures and Tolerance

Medical prophylaxis to prevent STIs is an extreme measure. Typically, preventive drugs are well-tolerated with no side effects since they are often a one-time use. Issues may arise only in individuals allergic to certain medications, which they must inform their doctor about!

Indications

Prevention after casual encounters is indicated when:

  • an unprotected sexual act occurred with a previously unknown person (no condom or condom breakage);
  • sex happened under the influence of alcohol or drugs with a lesser-known partner;
  • rape occurred (often affecting women).
Prevention should be done as soon as possible to maximize effectiveness in preventing potential STIs.

Prices and Clinics

Preventive measures against STIs can be carried out at any clinic with a venereology department. Costs depend on the chosen facility and the scope of preventive measures prescribed by the venereologist. Use the medical portal to select a conveniently located clinic and specialist.
