Catheterization of the bladder is the process of inserting a special tube (catheter) into the bladder to drain fluid from the bladder. The catheter is inserted through the urethra. This manipulation is performed before surgery on the organs of the reproductive system. The procedure removes urine from the bladder, washes the organs of the genitourinary system, uses it for diagnostics, etc. Catheterization is performed using a catheter, which is a metal arc-shaped tube with a holder at the end. In some cases, a flexible rubber tube is used.

Bladder Catheterization bladder

The process of preparing for bladder catheterization in women and men is practically no different. To prepare the patient, you need to:

  • treat the catheter and gloves with an antiseptic;
  • wash the patient in the pubic and pelvic area;
  • wipe the genitals with an antiseptic solution.

Bladder catheterization in women

The procedure does not cause any difficulties in women, because the urethral canal is relatively short. The procedure is as follows:

  • the health worker approaches the patient from the right side;
  • pulls the labia back with one hand;
  • treats the genitals with water and an antiseptic solution;
  • lubricates the front edge of the catheter with petroleum jelly;
  • carefully inserts it into the urethra.

The end of the procedure is indicated by the appearance of discharge from the catheter. That is, the front edge of the tube has reached the bladder.

The patient must be warned that if pain occurs, she must immediately inform the health worker.

Bladder Catheterization in Men

A number of difficulties may arise during bladder catheterization in men. This is explained by the fact that the length of the urethra in men can reach 25 cm. At the same time, physiologically it can be narrower than in women and have a non-uniform structure of the canal in terms of volume. The procedure is carried out as follows:

  • the health worker enters from the right side of the patient;
  • treats the head of the penis with water and an antiseptic solution, especially thoroughly washing the external canal of the urethra;
  • lubricates the catheter with petroleum jelly or glycerin;
  • takes the tube with tweezers and inserts it into the urethra, holding the penis with the left hand;
  • the tube moves into the cavity of the canal slowly, without effort, when the catheter reaches the physiologically narrow sections of the urethra, the patient should take several deep breaths to relax the smooth muscles;
  • if a spasm of the urethra occurs, the procedure is suspended and continued as soon as it disappears;
  • the end of the manipulation can be considered the appearance of discharge from tubes.

Bladder catheterization: catheterization algorithm with a metal device

If urethral canal strictures or prostate adenoma were detected during the preliminary examination and diagnosis, a metal catheter is installed. The procedure is as follows:

  • the health worker enters from the right side of the patient;
  • washes the head of the patient's penis with water and an antiseptic solution;
  • holds the penis in a vertical position with one hand;
  • carefully inserts the catheter with the right hand, ensuring that it remains strictly vertical;
  • the tube is carefully advanced along the urethra, while the penis is pulled onto it until the catheter is completely hidden;
  • then the penis is carefully tilted toward the stomach, the remaining free end of the catheter is advanced to the base of the penis;
  • after this, the catheter is placed in a vertical position;
  • the doctor feels the end of the tube on the lower surface of the genital organ and presses lightly on it with the index finger finger;
  • after passing the narrow section, the catheter is positioned in a downward direction;
  • as soon as the front tip of the tube enters the bladder, fluid begins to be released from it.

After the doctor has placed the device, it must not be moved or displaced so as not to injure the organs.

After catheterization of the bladder

The goal of any medical procedure is to alleviate the patient's suffering. However, in this case, a number of unforeseen consequences may arise, the most common of which are injury to the bladder, urethra, and infection of organs. That is, pathologies such as cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, etc. may occur. These problems may arise as a result of the doctor's failure to comply with safety precautions or antiseptic rules.
