Urethrography. Prices, reviews, ratings
General information
This procedure is one of the most informative and allows you to most accurately understand the cause of discomfort in the urethra and prostate gland. Urethrography can be performed on both men and women with some differences in the procedure. To perform the procedure, you will need:
- a special syringe with a rubber tip;
- a radiopaque substance;
- an X-ray, which will show the image of the urethra of the person being examined;
There are two types of urethrography: retrograde and micturition. These two types complement each other informatively.
Procedure
Preparation
This procedure does not require any special preparation. Before performing urethrography, the patient must inform the doctor about possible allergic reactions.
Procedure for performing urethrography
For retrograde (ascending) urethrography, the patient must lie on his back. Next, a radiopaque substance is injected directly into the urethra using a syringe with a rubber tip. The substance can also be injected using a two-channel catheter.
Retrograde urethrography in men is performed slightly differently than in women. In a supine position, they additionally need to bend their left leg at the knee and pull it towards them, and straighten their right leg and move it slightly to the side. To better control the process and to have a better view, it is necessary to straighten the penis and hold it in this position throughout the radiography. When the urethra is completely filled with the substance, then an X-ray (a picture of the urethra) is taken.
Urethrography is a very valuable diagnostic method for identifying various pathologies and diseases of the urethra, which allows you to determine the correct treatment tactics.
Mictive or descending urethrography is performed to complement the ascending one. Up to 200 ml of radiopaque substance is introduced through the urethra directly into the bladder. Since the bladder immediately tries to get rid of such a quantity of liquid, urination occurs. It is at this moment that the X-ray is taken. During micturition urethrography, significantly more substance is introduced than during retrograde urethrography, but this procedure allows for a more thorough examination of the posterior urethra. During this process, the neck of the bladder becomes funnel-shaped, and the posterior urethra expands by 5 mm. Thus, conducting both types of urethrography allows you to look more broadly at the condition of the urethra, as well as identify defects, pathologies and possible diseases.
Rehabilitation period
This procedure is harmless and painless, so after it the patient will be able to return to their daily activities.
Indications
The following factors are indications for this examination:
- prostate tumor of any size;
- impaired functioning of the urethra;
- suspected pathological changes in the ureter;
- suspected development of various anomalies in the urethra;
Contraindications
Although urethrography is a fairly harmless and painless procedure, there are still some contraindications. Those who have an intolerance to substances containing iodine, urethrorrhaggia or acute inflammatory processes of the urethra are not recommended to undergo urethrography.
Before the examination, it is imperative to consult a urologist.
