Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive procedure for studying the properties of urine, which allows you to check the functionality of the sphincters of the urethra and bladder.

General information

Uroflowmetry allows you to determine the flow rate of urine excreted during urination, its amount and duration of excretion. This procedure is not traumatic and does not pose a threat to the mucous membranes of the urethra. The entire procedure is performed using a uroflowmeter. The results of the procedure are displayed on the monitor screen as a graph. This graph shows the work of the lower urinary tract and also detects any difficulty in removing urine from the body.

Procedure

Preparation

Before the procedure, the doctor will ask you to drink 0.5 to 1 liter of water so that the bladder is filled with liquid before the start of uroflowmetry. Also during the preparation, the urologist will consult on any issue related to the procedure.

If you are taking any medications, including medicinal teas and herbal infusions, be sure to tell your doctor about this, as they can affect the results of uroflowmetry.

Uroflowmetry procedure

Before the procedure, the doctor will explain how to use the uroflowmeter. Also, you should not urinate before the uroflowmetry itself. The uroflowmeter is a kind of funnel that is connected by a conductor to a recorder and a measuring device. When the patient is ready to start urinating, the doctor turns on the device and waits 5 seconds, then the patient urinates into the funnel. After the patient urinates into the funnel, the doctor counts another 5 seconds and turns off the device. During the procedure, the patient must relax the abdominal and urethral muscles as much as possible.

Indications

Indications for uroflowmetry are:

  • prostate adenoma in men (this problem leads to the growth of a benign tumor that obstructs the passage of urine during urination);
  • bladder or prostate cancer;
  • urinary incontinence or uncontrolled urination;
  • urethral or renal obstruction;
  • bladder dysfunction due to injuries to the nervous system;
  • stress urinary incontinence;
  • a diagnostic procedure used in conjunction with cystoscopy or cystography.
