Nephroscintigraphy is a diagnostic test that involves injecting a radioactive substance into a patient's body to obtain a graphical image of the kidneys using a device such as a gamma camera.
Nephroscintigraphy is a diagnostic test in which a radioactive substance is injected into the patient's body to produce a graphical image of the kidneys using a device such as a gamma camera.

General information

Such popular diagnostic methods as ultrasound, CT and radiography make it possible to assess the structure of the kidneys, shape, size, but only nephroscintigraphy helps to fully examine the functioning of the kidneys and the features of their work.

Procedure

Preparation

No special preparation measures are required, except for drinking fluids before the test to empty the bladder.

Nephroscintigraphy procedure

There are two types of kidney scintigraphy - static and dynamic.

Statistical kidney scintigraphy makes it possible to assess the functioning of the renal parenchyma and changes in its work as follows:

  • intravenous administration of a certain amount of tubulotropic drug;
  • scanning the kidneys after 40-60 minutes and obtaining images from different angles simultaneously, which makes it possible to determine the location of the excess or, conversely, decreased accumulation of the administered substances.
Dynamic nephroscintigraphy is considered more effective, as it makes it possible to fully control the process of passage of a radioactive drug through the body, from the kidneys to the bladder.

During dynamic nephroscintigraphy, the entire urinary system is assessed as accurately as possible in the following way:

  • Intravenous administration of a radioactive drug;
  • Registration of radioactivity over the kidneys using a gamma camera:
  • appearance of an image of the renal parenchyma (on average after 4 minutes);
  • entry of the drug into the calyceal-pelvic sphere;
  • filling of the bladder;
  • obtaining computer graphic images of the kidneys.

The results obtained make it possible to fully assess the state of the kidneys, make a correct diagnosis and prescribe the necessary course of treatment.

Rehabilitation period

All radioactive drugs used are present in the body for a short time. Often the patient is advised to increase the volume of fluid consumed to ensure the fastest possible exit of diagnostic products from the body.

Complications

As a rule, there are no serious complications after nephroscintigraphy. The following side effects are quite normal after the examination:

  • increased or decreased blood pressure;
  • increased frequency and increased urge to urinate.

Indications

Nephroscintigraphy should be performed in the following cases:

  • acute or chronic renal failure;
  • obstruction of the urinary tract (difficulty in the outflow of urine);
  • renal artery stenosis;
  • a kidney transplanted to the patient (donor kidney);
  • renal injuries of any nature;
  • lesion of the renal vessels;
  • arterial hypertension;
  • reflux nephropathy;
  • suspected tumor-like neoplasms.

Contraindications

Often, nephroscintigraphy is not recommended for pregnant women, mothers who are breastfeeding, and people who are allergic to the drugs used during the procedure.

If any other radionuclide study has been performed previously, nephroscintigraphy is prohibited in the near future in order to avoid oversaturation of the human body with radioactive elements.

Prices and clinics

Nephroscintigraphy of the kidneys, both static and dynamic, is not performed in all medical institutions. Using the data from the medical portal, you can learn about the clinics that provide this service and their prices, and also choose the most convenient place for you in terms of location and financial capabilities.
