Bladder resection is a surgical procedure that removes a tumor in the bladder.
Bladder resection is a surgical procedure that removes a tumor in the bladder.

General information

Resection can be performed in two ways: open and transurethral. The advantage of transurethral surgery over open surgery is that it leaves no scars on the body and causes less tissue trauma.

Symptoms of tumors and diverticula:

  • difficulty urinating;
  • severe pain during urination;
  • pus and blood come out with urine.

Procedure

Preparation

Preparation for this surgery is the same as for other diseases of the urinary tract. Urine and blood tests are mandatory. If open resection is used, one of the most important indicators will be the degree of blood clotting. A study of the body's reaction to anesthesia and other medications is also carried out. Before the operation, the hair in the groin area must be removed.

The process of bladder resection

Before the start of transurethral resection, the patient is anesthetized. Then, a flexible tube with a video camera at the end is inserted through the urethra. It is necessary for visual control of the operation. Urine is drained from the urethra using a catheter. Then, the tumor itself is removed in two stages. First, the endovesical part of the tumor is cut off and sent for morphological analysis, and then the base of the tumor is completely cut off. Analysis of the surgical material allows us to understand whether there is a possibility of tumor recurrence and whether additional manipulations are needed. Open surgery is performed only when transurethral resection of the kidney cannot be used.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. A longitudinal incision is made in the groin area in order to get to the bladder. Then, the bladder is separated from the abdominal wall and brought out. Next, an incision is made in the bladder and the tumor is actually resected. After this, the bladder wall is sutured with catgut thread.

After the operation, a drainage tube is brought out through the wound and the wound is sutured. After the operation, a catheter remains in the bladder to drain urine, which is removed after a few days.

Rehabilitation period

After the operation, the patient is prescribed painkillers and antibiotics to prevent infection. For several days, the bladder will be flushed with furacilin through the catheter. Then, as a rule, on the eighth day, the stitches are removed and the catheter is removed.

Indications

Bladder resection may be required in the following cases:

  • the presence of a tumor in the bladder;
  • bladder diverticula (sac-like formation on the inner wall of the bladder).

Contraindications

There are also contraindications to bladder resection:

  • blood clotting disorder;
  • anatomical features of the bladder.

Complications

The following may occur after bladder resection complications:

  • bleeding;
  • infectious diseases;
  • postoperative hernia;
  • recurrence of a tumor in the bladder (extremely rare).
