Pyelonephritis: treatment
Pyelonephritis is divided into two types: acute and chronic. During the period of acute pyelonephritis, the patient may experience the following symptoms:
- high general body temperature;
- severe headaches;
- general weakness of the whole body;
- aching and pulling pains in the pelvic region;
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
- accumulations of pus or bloody discharge are noticeable in the urine.
Chronic pyelonephritis is a standard consequence of an untreated acute form of the disease. Its characteristic symptoms are:
- frequent urge to urinate;
- migraines;
- causeless loss of appetite;
- aching and nagging pain in the lower back;
- other symptoms characteristic of renal failure.
The most common causes of pyelonephritis are:
- abnormalities in the development of the genitourinary system in children under 7 years of age;
- onset of sexual activity;
- complications during pregnancy or after bearing a child;
- stones in the bladder, kidneys, etc.
Acute pyelonephritis: treatment
As a rule, acute pyelonephritis affects only one kidney. It is characterized by purulent or serous damage to the renal tissue and the manifestation of severe symptoms. The complex treatment of the pathology includes mandatory drug therapy, diet, and, if necessary, surgical intervention.
Treatment of pyelonephritis: drugs
The most important drugs for the treatment of acute pyelonephritis are antibiotics. They are prescribed in a course that is necessary for the complete destruction of pathogenic microorganisms. At the same time, it is necessary to prevent the development of relapses or the transformation of the disease into a chronic form. For this, antibiotics are prescribed for a period of at least 6 weeks.
The first few days are injection drugs, after which the patient is transferred to capsules and tablets. To begin with, a broad-spectrum antibiotic is selected, and based on the test results, the drug is replaced with one that is more targeted for the given pathology. These can be antibiotics of the penicillin group, sulfonamides, cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, etc.
If the drug is selected correctly, the following manifestations from the patient's health should be observed:
- reduction in the manifestations of poisoning;
- improvement in kidney function;
- stabilization of the general state of health.
Various methods are used to monitor the patient's health:
- blood and urine tests;
- ultrasound;
- cytoscopy, etc.
Chronic pyelonephritis: treatment
If acute pyelonephritis is accompanied by severe purulent kidney damage and drug administration treatments have not yielded results, surgical intervention is used.
The goal of the process is to prevent the spread of the disease to the healthy kidney. The operation is carried out as follows:
- the kidney is removed from the capsule;
- abscesses are opened;
- drainage is installed.
If the organ is completely damaged, an operation is performed to remove the entire kidney.
More than 20% of patients with acute pyelonephritis develop a chronic form of the disease. In this case, periods of exacerbation are replaced by periods of attenuation of the disease. Treatment does not require hospitalization, but is carried out at home, subject to regular visits to the doctor. During periods of exacerbation, it is necessary to follow a diet, drink decoctions of medicinal herbs, and undergo spa treatment.
To prevent periods of exacerbation, it is necessary:
- do not overcool the body;
- do not drink a lot of fluids;
- take preventive measures to prevent colds;
- increase immunity;
- follow a rest and diet regimen;
- do not delay urination, go to the toilet at the first urge;
- take antibacterial agents as recommended by a doctor;
- observe intimate hygiene.
When prescribing treatment for pyelonephritis, the doctor will definitely prescribe a certain diet, which does not allow you to eat food:
- canned food, spices, home-pickled foods, smoked foods;
- eat as few sweets and baked goods as possible;
- do not drink alcoholic beverages, strong teas, coffee, mineral carbonated water, lemonades;
- fried, fatty, spicy foods;
- exclude radishes, horseradish, garlic;
- mushrooms, legumes, fresh cabbage are not recommended for consumption;
- watermelons, melons, rose hips, apples, zucchini.
The basis of the food basket should be fruits, vegetables, boiled poultry, veal, dairy products, cereals.
After treatment of pyelonephritis, several weeks, do not engage in heavy physical activity, carry heavy objects, and be careful not to overcool the body.
Treatment is contraindicated in a number of cases:
- in the presence of genitourinary infections;
- allergic reactions to medications;
- impaired kidney function.
