The Reberg test is a urine test that measures the rate at which the kidneys excrete urine with creatinine. This creatinine excretion is also called glomerular filtration or creatinine clearance.
The Reberg test is a urine test that measures the rate at which the kidneys excrete urine containing creatinine. This creatinine excretion is also called glomerular filtration or creatinine clearance.

General information

A certain amount of blood passes through the kidneys every minute, at the same time a certain amount of plasma is excreted or creatinine clearance occurs. If clearance is reduced, this may mean that one or both kidneys are affected by an infection. The Reberg urine test is more effective than the blood urea and creatinine test.

Procedure

Preparation

Before collecting the sample for the Reberg test, the following preparatory steps must be taken:

  • the day before the test, exclude coffee, animal food, and alcoholic beverages from your diet;
  • limit yourself in physical activity;
  • before starting the test, drink up to 0.5 liters of water and empty your bladder;
  • the sample must be taken in the morning and on an empty stomach.
Preparation for the test during pregnancy differs from the usual preparation for this procedure, so the nuances should be clarified with doctor.

Rehberg test procedure

The Rehberg test involves taking urine and blood tests. Each time urine is collected, the exact time is noted when the collection was made, and blood is taken once a day on an empty stomach, since the creatinine level in the blood practically does not change throughout the day. The procedure can be carried out in three different ways:

  • In the first case, urine is collected in two different portions with a time difference of one hour. Then, minute diuresis and the amount of creatinine are determined by the indicators. After this, an accurate creatinine clearance is made based on the data - the volume of urine is multiplied by the amount of creatinine in it and divided by the concentration of creatinine in the blood plasma, multiplied by the time of urine collection in minutes.
  • In the second case, creatinine clearance is determined by the average indicators in the daily amount of urine. This analysis of the Reberg test is used much less frequently.
  • In the third variant, the Reberg test is used more for scientific purposes. To determine glomerular filtration, urine is collected in two portions for 12 hours during the daytime and for 12 hours at night. This is how the average creatinine clearance is determined.

Indications

The Reberg test is indicated in the following cases:

  • renal failure;
  • blood discharge during urination;
  • renal dysfunction;
  • to monitor the treatment of kidney diseases;
  • urolithiasis;
  • renal parenchyma disease;
  • pyelonephritis.

Contraindications

Contraindications to this procedure are:

  • cancer of the urinary bladder;
  • taking medications that cannot be refused and that affect the test results.

Complications

The Reberg test is a safe procedure, so, as a rule, there are no complications after it.
