Lumbosacral osteochondrosis (spondylosis) is a common vertebrogenic disease characterized by degenerative lesions of the intervertebral discs. Three quarters of all people suffer from it. It is spread among men and women approximately equally. It affects the working, young population. The pathology is severe, in many cases it leads to disability.
General information
Lumbar osteochondrosis can be of the following types: types:
- Lumbago is an acute "lumbago" in the lower back. It occurs with sudden movements, awkward turns, or incorrect lifting of heavy objects.
- Lumbago is a chronic pain that intensifies from prolonged monotonous positions and under load.
- Lumbosciatica is a girdle pain that radiates to the lower limbs (one or both at once). These three forms of spondylosis are referred to as a reflex syndrome.
- Radiculitis is an inflammation of the sacral nerve roots (the so-called radicular syndrome). It occurs when a nerve root (or several) is compressed.
- Radiculoischemia is compression of the radicular-spinal arteries. It manifests itself as a disturbance of sensitivity in the lower limbs and movement disorders. The pain symptom is weakly expressed or absent. Also refers to radicular syndrome.
Causes of occurrence
The cause of this condition is the narrowing of the gap between the vertebrae and the appearance of a protrusion (prolapse) of the spinal disc and pinching of the nerve roots (one or more).
The following factors contribute to the development of this process:
- impaired blood circulation in the spine;
- disorder of metabolic processes in the vertebrae;
- obesity;
- lifting weights;
- unsuccessful body turn;
- spine injuries.
Procedure
Treatment lumbar osteochondrosis is treated by a vertebroneurologist or neurologist.
What methods does the doctor use:
- examination, questioning, palpation;
- additional diagnostic methods if necessary: x-ray, laboratory tests, ECG, magnetic resonance imaging, others;
- medicines: to relieve pain; anti-inflammatory; vitamins; antispasmodics; homeopathic medicines, others;
- reflex methods: massage, acupuncture, manual therapy, impact on biologically active points by various methods, moxibustion, others;
- local treatment: applications, pain-relieving ointments, compresses, creams, medicinal plasters, gels;
- special gymnastics;
- sanatorium and spa treatment;
- dietary nutrition;
- in difficult cases, surgical intervention is indicated.
An experienced doctor, using various effective methods, achieves good results in the treatment of spondylosis. But it should be remembered that this process is very long and it is impossible to solve such a serious problem quickly.
What results can be expected:
- reduction or elimination of pain;
- normalization of blood circulation in the spinal column;
- elimination of numbness of the limbs;
- relief of inflammation;
- normalization of the emotional background.
Indications and contraindications
You can seek advice from a vertebroneurologist if you have the following symptoms:
- sharp shooting pains in the lumbosacral region;
- sluggish pain in lower back;
- impaired motor functions of the legs;
- numbness, pain, "goosebumps", coldness of the lower extremities;
- difficulty walking.
The complex is selected individually, taking into account concomitant diseases. Therefore, the issue of contraindications to the use of this or that method is decided by the doctor.
Complications
This pathology must be treated by a good specialist. In this case, the negative consequences of treatment are minimal or absent.
Don't let the disease get worse and don't self-medicate!
Don't forget that it is better, easier and cheaper to take preventive measures for life and take care of the health of your spine than to treat it!
