Kyphosis is a curvature of the upper spine, which often results in a hump. The thoracic spine is most often affected, and the sacral spine is less often affected. Boys are more likely to suffer from the disease during the period of hormonal growth – 12-15 years old. Kyphosis looks like a strong stoop.

General information

Classification and causes occurrence

Types of kyphosis are closely related to the main development factor:

  1. Posterior (postural) - the so-called round back. This form is associated with poor posture. Men under 30 are more likely to get sick. It mainly develops due to a sedentary lifestyle. This type is the easiest, and you can get rid of it yourself by constantly doing stretching exercises.
  2. Dorsal juvenile (Scheuermann-Mau syndrome) - the exact cause has not been established, possibly poor heredity. It is characterized by the fact that several thoracic vertebrae acquire a wedge-shaped form, and their anterior part is narrowed.
  3. Congenital - here the negative factor is an anomaly in the development of the spine, for example, as a result of a birth injury. This is a severe form, leading to paralysis of the lower extremities.
  4. Post-traumatic - develops after a complex injury to the spinal column. The pathology is progressive, in which the nerves are compressed.
  5. Post-operative - its cause is unsuccessful fixation of the spine and failure to comply with the post-operative period.
  6. Degenerative - caused by degenerative dystrophic disorders in the spine. Over time, it leads to damage to the intervertebral discs.
  7. Secondary - occurs as a result of systemic diseases (lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.), oncology, cerebral palsy, radiation.

Procedure

Preparation

The patient must undergo all necessary diagnostics before the doctor prescribes a set of treatment measures. The best diagnostic method for this pathology is radiography with control or magnetic resonance.

The doctor will conduct a thorough examination and survey, do a number of diagnostic tests and check reflexes. Additional tests are possible.

Conducting the procedure

Treatment of kyphosis in children and adults is prescribed and carried out by a vertebroneurologist. Most cases are cured by conservative methods that involve eliminating symptoms:

  • anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving drugs;
  • physiotherapy;
  • therapeutic exercise complex;
  • massage.
Surgical intervention is rarely used. Always - with postoperative kyphosis. Sometimes - with congenital, degenerative, post-traumatic.

Indications

Seek medical help if you notice the following symptoms:

  • back and head pain;
  • dizziness;
  • rapid fatigue;
  • muscle weakness and spasms;
  • joint aches;
  • spine deformation.

In addition, there are indications for surgical treatment of spinal kyphosis:

  • severe pain syndrome, in which drug methods have proven ineffective;
  • compression of nerve roots vertebrae;
  • correction of cosmetic defects;
  • elimination of severe deformation;
  • congenital anomalies;
  • preservation of nerve structures from further compression.

Contraindications

The success of healing kyphosis of the spine depends not only on the high professionalism of the doctor, but also on the stage of the disease at which the patient seeks help. The earlier, the lower the risk of complications and progression of the pathology.
