Herniated disc is a dangerous condition characterized by a rupture of the fibrous ring and then a prolapse of the nucleus outward. It can appear in any part of the spine: cervical, lumbar, sacral. The pathology least of all affects the thoracic. Mostly affects the working population aged 21-56.

Herniated disc is a dangerous condition characterized by a rupture of the fibrous ring and then a prolapse of the nucleus outward. It can appear in any part of the spine: cervical, lumbar, sacral. The pathology affects the thoracic least of all. Mostly affects the working population aged 21-56.

General information

The vertebrae that form the human spine are connected by oval discs (elastic pads). They perform a shock-absorbing function, which is why our spine is so flexible. This cartilaginous body with a gelatinous core is surrounded by a fibrous ring. With strong compression, the ring ruptures and the core bulges outward. This is the mechanism by which an intervertebral hernia (keel) occurs.

Classification by size:

  • prolapse - the keel protrudes by 2-3 mm;
  • protrusion - by 4-15 mm;
  • extrusion - protrusion beyond the elastic pad.

By stages:

  • first - the cartilaginous body cracks, blood circulation in this area is disrupted, the tissues around it swell, the spinal cord root lacks nutrition (oxygen). Under the influence of irritation, the vertebral nerve causes vascular spasm. At this point, patients feel shooting pains in the affected area of the spine. At this stage, prolapse is formed;
  • the second - the pains become dull, but radiate to the arm and/or leg along the innervation. Compression of the nerve causes radicular syndrome. If at this time there is contact between the root and the protrusion, then severe pain appears. At this stage, protrusion appears;
  • the third - growths appear on the bone tissue (osteophytes), which cause circulatory disorders. Organic changes occur when the gelatinous substance partially or completely ceases to perform its normal function;
  • the fourth stage - atrophy of the nerve and surrounding tissues begins. Unpleasant sensations practically disappear. Ankylosing block occurs: compaction, calcification, wrinkling of the cartilaginous body, which leads to immobilization of the vertebral joint.

By location:

  • lateral;
  • anterolateral;
  • posterior lateral;
  • median.

Procedure

Preparation

Before starting treatment of intervertebral protrusion, it is necessary to accurately determine its cause.

The most common causes:

  • back injury;
  • hereditary factor;
  • developmental anomalies musculoskeletal system;
  • osteochondrosis;
  • infections (for example, bone tuberculosis);
  • poor posture;
  • heavy loads;
  • incorrect turns, awkward movements.

Diagnosis and treatment of intervertebral disc herniation is carried out by a vertebroneurologist. The diagnosis is made based on the following methods:

  • examination, questioning, palpation;
  • back x-ray;
  • magnetic resonance therapy;
  • electromyography;
  • ECG;
  • blood and urine tests;
  • computer tomography.

Conducting the procedure

  • Treatment of protrusions of the cervical, lumbar, sacral spine is possible in three ways: medication, manual (without surgery) and surgical.
  • Therapy is aimed, first of all, at relieving the painful symptom. Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving injections, tablets, ointments, creams are used.
  • Reflex methods are more effective: vacuum therapy, acupuncture, acupuncture, pain-relieving blockades and others.
  • Surgical intervention is used in the absence of effect from conservative therapy. Currently, there are innovative methods of surgical treatment of intervertebral hernia. Sometimes the affected part is removed.
  • The process of solving this problem is long, from a month to six months.

Indications

It is necessary to urgently consult a specialist if the following symptoms appear:

  • back pain, especially in the lower back, intensifying after exertion or a long stay in one position;
  • inability to straighten the back completely;
  • numbness in the lower limbs;
  • disorder of defecation and urination;
  • cervical hernia manifests itself as dizziness, headache, numbness of the arms, fluctuations in blood pressure, pain in the chest and neck, curvature of the spine.

Contraindications

The complex of treatment measures for such a serious disease is quite complex. Therefore, the doctor selects it individually, based on the main causes and concomitant diseases, taking into account all contraindications.

Remember: the sooner you seek help, the easier and faster the problem is solved!

Prices and clinics

The surgical approach requires hospital conditions. The drug method can, at the discretion of the doctor, be used on an outpatient basis. Find out the clinics and the cost of a consultation with a vertebroneurologist on the portal .
