General information
Disks (cartilaginous bodies) are located between the vertebrae. Thanks to them, our spine is flexible and elastic. The disc consists of a nucleus (a gelatinous substance) and a fibrous ring that surrounds it and prevents it from coming out.
The main difference between a protrusion and an intervertebral hernia is that in the first case the ring does not rupture, and the nucleus does not flow beyond the boundaries of the cartilaginous body. It only protrudes 4-15 mm into the spinal canal. In the second case, a ring rupture occurs and the gelatinous substance exits the disk.
Causes of occurrence
This process is caused by a number of reasons:
- wear and tear of the disks with age;
- spine injuries;
- professional sports;
- lifting excessive weights;
- tuberculosis and other severe inflammatory conditions.

By type:
- circular (diffuse) protrusion - protrusion of the disk in a circle. This is a chronic form, leading to disability without assistance. Degenerative dystrophic changes in the spine occur: pinched nerve roots, stiffness, "lumbago". Can be multiple;
- local - depending on the direction of the protrusion, it can be:
- lateral - in any direction;
- posterolateral - into the spinal foramen. The most dangerous form, since it is most likely to cause compression of the roots;
- central and posterior (medial) - into the spinal canal. If the protrusion occurs in the cervical region, then the signs appear in the early stages. If in the lumbar region, then more often in the late stages, which worsens the prognosis.
