Diphtheria vaccination is a medical procedure aimed at reducing the likelihood of contracting the disease of the same name. After vaccination, 95% of children do not develop this pathology at all. Diphtheria is a serious infectious disease caused by the microorganism Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The disease occurs with severe inflammatory processes, the method of transmission is airborne, household and through food. Symptoms of poisoning of the body, which appear when an exotoxin enters the blood, are considered especially dangerous.

Diphtheria vaccination

Diphtheria vaccination is mandatory. The disease leads to such pathologies as:

  • toxic shock;
  • myocarditis;
  • nephrosis;
  • polyneuritis and others.

In most cases, the disease affects the respiratory organs, skin. The pathology is especially serious when a child's mouth becomes congested with airways caused by swelling. In most cases, this leads to death.

Diphtheria vaccination for children

Before performing the manipulation, it is imperative to visit a pediatrician to assess the general health of the child. To do this, the doctor will measure the body temperature, examine the baby's throat, ears and nose. Basic blood and urine tests are prescribed in advance. All these procedures allow to exclude the slightest possibility of the risk of a latent disease.

The manipulation is carried out in the vaccination room. The injection dosage is 0.5 ml. The injection is given in the upper right part of the gluteal muscle, for children under 1 year old the vaccine is given under the shoulder blade.

After the diphtheria vaccination

The following symptoms are very often observed after vaccination:

  • increased general body temperature;
  • deterioration in health and well-being for a couple of days;
  • pain, swelling and redness of the injection site;
  • skin rashes that disappear in 1-2 days.

Diphtheria and tetanus vaccination

In Russia, the diphtheria vaccination is given to all (healthy) children without exception from the age of 3 months. Before the child turns 1 year old, he must have received 3 vaccinations. The minimum interval between procedures should be at least 45 days. Revaccination is carried out at 2 years, repeated vaccinations are done at 7 years and at 14 years.

The following vaccines are used for manipulation:

  • DPT.
  • ADS-M.
  • Pentaxim.
  • Infanrix.
  • Infanrix Hexa.

If vaccinations were not done according to the established schedule, the first vaccine is prescribed at the age of 6 years. In this case, the following drugs are used:

  • ADS.
  • ADS-M.

The procedure is carried out 2 times, an interval of 45 days is observed between manipulations. Revaccination in this case should be carried out after six months.

The diphtheria vaccination does not guarantee 100% protection against the disease, but significantly minimizes the percentage of severe complications.

Important contraindications include:

  • Recently suffered viral infections, even mild forms of acute respiratory infections and respiratory viral infections. In this case, the vaccine is prescribed as soon as the general elevated body temperature subsides.
  • After a severe cold with a strong cough and a long rehabilitation period, the vaccination is given 2 weeks after recovery.
  • For children with chronic kidney and liver pathologies, serious immune disorders, the procedure is carried out at the stage of attenuation of the disease and under the supervision of a pediatrician.

Conditional contraindications, in which the vaccination schedule may be shifted, include:

  • The period when the child is taking medications that significantly reduce immune defense functions.
  • If the child has diseases that cause seizures or convulsions.
  • In case of allergic reactions to groups of drugs included in the vaccine.
  • If the child has intestinal or stomach upset, gag reflex.

The following complications are possible after vaccination:

  • General lethargy and a painful state of the body.
  • Prolonged headaches.
  • Redness, slight swelling and a feeling of discomfort in the injection area.
  • Convulsions.
  • Screaming fits in children.
  • Allergic reactions up to urticaria and Quincke's edema. Anaphylactic shock is possible.

Should I get vaccinated against diphtheria?

Any adult, sane person can answer this question for themselves, putting aside emotions and prejudices. The life of a child is at stake. Thousands of children have died of diphtheria for many centuries. The blockage of the respiratory tract in a child can last no more than 30 minutes, so emergency medical care is not always possible.

In addition, a person with diphtheria is extremely dangerous to others. After all, he is a source of a deadly infection. The bacteria of the disease can only live in the human body, so the more vaccinated people, the lower the risk of infection and epidemic. In such a society, the risk of infection is reduced to zero. This process was done in its time with smallpox.
