Whooping cough vaccination is a specialized medical procedure aimed at reducing the possibility of a person becoming infected with this disease. This disease, if not recognized at an early stage, can lead to death. Vaccination is the main way to avoid infection during an epidemic. Whooping cough is a serious bacterial infection in which a person suffers from a strong, debilitating cough and symptoms of poisoning of the body.

Whooping cough vaccination

To reduce the risk of infection of the child, the pertussis vaccine is included in the list of mandatory vaccinations. The disease is also dangerous because when it occurs, it completely resembles the symptoms of a cold that is rapidly gaining momentum. As a result, in a short period of time it develops into a pathology in which it is too difficult to provide assistance to the patient.

In some countries, the whooping cough vaccine is prescribed in the 2nd month after birth. The source of infection is an infected person. The incubation period of the disease lasts up to 2 weeks, after which it begins to manifest itself symptomatically and the patient automatically becomes a source of the deadly virus. The area of dissemination of bacteria is up to 2.5 meters. Even with proper treatment for 25 days after the onset of the disease, a person is a source of infection. According to statistics, most infected children are under 2 years old.

The whooping cough vaccine does not provide a 100% guarantee against the disease, but it reduces the risk of complications. Relapses of whooping cough infection almost never occur, and if the disease recurs, it proceeds almost without symptoms.

Vaccination against whooping cough and tetanus: vaccination schedule

Vaccination is carried out by injection. The patient is given an injection in the thigh. For babies, the vaccination schedule is as follows:

  • 3 months;
  • 4 months;
  • 5 months;
  • 6 months.

There should be a break of at least 40 days between vaccinations. Revaccination is possible no earlier than a year after the 3rd vaccination. This occurs at approximately 1.5 years. In this case, the doctor must be informed about how the patient's body reacted to the previous vaccine.

If the vaccination deadlines are missed for a number of valid reasons, the first vaccination is given at any time up to 4 years. After that, the next vaccination is given in 30-40 day increments.

How is the whooping cough vaccine given?

Before the vaccination, you must take your child to see a pediatrician. The doctor will check the baby's health. To do this, the body temperature will be measured, the throat, ears, and nose will be examined. The child must be absolutely healthy.

The vaccination is given intramuscularly (0.5 ml). The vaccine contains weakened strains of whooping cough bacteria, which the child's immune system easily overcomes. The body's protective functions accumulate for the next 20 years.

After vaccination, it is necessary to protect the baby from contact with strangers to eliminate the possibility of infection with other viral infections.

Whooping cough: DPT vaccination

The pertussis vaccination in Russia is included in the mandatory vaccination schedule. These can be DPT or AaDPT vaccinations, which include such components as whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria. The vaccination is given according to the schedule, it is not given to children over 4 years old.

Contraindications include:

General increase in body temperature in the child.

ARI, ARVI.

  • After a serious illness, the vaccination is given after a period of time set by the pediatrician.
  • The child has been prescribed drugs that reduce the body's defenses.
  • The child suffers from neurological disorders - seizures, convulsions.
  • A previous vaccination led to serious complications in the child's health.
  • At the moment, one of the relatives and friends is sick with whooping cough.
  • The child has an increased sensitivity to the components of the vaccine.
  • If the child's parents had a severe reaction to the drug in childhood.
  • The baby is in a state of severe stress.

Whooping cough: after vaccination

Among the frequently encountered complications, the following can be distinguished:

  • The baby's shrill crying, following with short breaks. Sometimes it can last up to half an hour and bring the child to complete exhaustion.
  • Increase in overall body temperature, in some cases up to 40 degrees.
  • Allergic reaction, skin rash, Quincke's edema and, if help is not provided in time, anaphylactic shock.
  • Lethargy, clouding of consciousness.
  • Convulsions.
  • Pallory and sweating, decreased blood pressure.

Almost all parents think about the advisability of vaccinations. However, whooping cough affects children at a very early age, because the baby's immune system is weak at this time. Infection leads to serious consequences, often fatal. The vaccine introduced into the child's body creates a group of antibodies capable of resisting a real infection, protecting against damage or reducing the severity of clinical manifestations of the disease.
