General information
The Wood's lamp diagnostic method is based on a physical effect - fluorescence of a substance infected with spores of Microsporum and Trichophyton fungi in the "soft" spectrum long-wave ultraviolet range, which is observed when the flow passes through a light filter. In this case, the analyzed objects affected by microsporum exhibit bright luminescence, while those exposed to trichophyton react with a dim greenish glow.
A light filter made of blue-violet "black" uviol glass with a composition of cobalt and nickel oxides and coated with a special phosphor, transmits only rays generated by mercury vapor in the wavelength range of 365, 398, 404 and 407 nanometers.
The nature of this phenomenon has not been fully studied, but it is reliably known that after such exposure, the infected substance "leaves a trace" - objects continue to emit fluorescent glow for a fairly long period of time even after the death of the pathogen.
Samples of the identified cultures are then sent for additional microscopic and/or cultural studies.
Wood's lamp diagnostic procedure
First of all, the areas of the patient's skin and hair to be examined and the equipment itself are thoroughly cleaned and treated (without the use of disinfectants).
Immediately before starting work, the device is warmed up for several minutes according to the operating instructions.
All external and internal sources of natural and artificial lighting that can affect the process and distort the analysis picture are deactivated.
The laboratory personnel responsible for the technology adapt their visual organs to the conditions of a dark environment in advance.
The device is brought into working position and installed at a level of 15-20 centimeters from the area to be examined.
Usually the duration of the procedure does not exceed one minute.
Accepted parameters
Luminescence (glow) – corresponding pathology or skin condition:
- Yellow (yellowish-red or brown) – lichen (Pityriasis versicolor).
- Reddish (coral) – erythrasma (Erythrasma).
- Green – pseudomonads (Pseudomonas).
- White – vitiligo (Vitiligo).
- Greenish – fungal infection.
- Brown – impaired skin pigmentation.
- Violet – sensitive (normal).
- Turquoise – dry (normal).
- Blue (light) – healthy (uninfected).
Indications
The reasons for screening are visualization of signs of clinical manifestations of mycoses and the appointment of a set of studies and analysis.
The Wood's lamp in the diagnosis of skin diseases is most often used to search for and determine such common infectious lesions as: dermatoses, microsporia, trichophytosis, rubrophytosis, leukoplakia, favus, vitiligo, lupus and candidiasis.
The method allows diagnosing not only obvious and closed areas of the epidermis, but also the eyebrows, armpits, groin area, nails and vellus hair.
Contraindications and complications
Irradiation with "black spectrum" rays lasting more than two minutes - is contraindicated, as it promotes allergic reactions and skin pigmentation.
A direct contraindication to luminescent diagnostics is the presence of open wounds and damage to the epidermis of the examined areas.
