General information
The thyroid gland secretes special hormones, the most important of which is thyroxine. It also absorbs and accumulates iodine. Thyroxine controls metabolism in the body and has a strong effect on a large number of systems.
The main goal of this test is to assess the size, functions of the gland, the nature of focal changes in it.

Preparation
Before testing, you should consult a doctor. It is necessary to cancel drugs containing iodine, phenothiazines and anticoagulants. You should not come to the session immediately after CT scanning (only after two to three weeks). Before the session, you need to empty the bladder.
Thyroid scintigraphy procedure
The patient swallows a special capsule containing a radioactive isotope of iodine. And after 24 hours, the test itself is performed, which lasts about six hours. Tc-99m can sometimes be used instead of iodine. A small amount of the substance is injected into the patient's vein. After about half an hour, the thyroid gland is photographed with a special gamma camera. The filming process lasts about ten minutes, after which the patient goes home. A "cold" node means no accumulation of the radioisotope. This may indicate decreased function and a cyst or malignancy. "Hot" means that there is a greater accumulation of the drug in this place. This indicates too high absorption of the iodine isotope in the thyroid gland.

- anomalies in the location of the thyroid gland;
- various nodular formations;
- for the purpose of differential diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis.
Contraindications
The only contraindication is pregnancy. Breastfeeding can be resumed 24 hours after the procedure.

A person may feel heat and blush on the face for some time. No side effects are observed after the procedure using the Tc-99m drug.
