General information
This test is carried out to assess the thyroid gland, its results do not depend on the concentration of proteins in the blood plasma that bind thyroxine.
Procedure
Preparation
The manipulations must be carried out before the patient starts taking medications or one week after they have been canceled. Three days before, exclude the use of drugs containing iodine.
The day before the procedure, it is necessary to limit the consumption of fried, fatty foods, alcohol, any physical activity is prohibited.
Blood test procedure for T4 hormones
The collection must be carried out in the morning and on an empty stomach, that is, after 10-12 hours have passed since the last meal. Before taking the biomaterial, it is allowed to drink only still water. Drinking other drinks can distort the test result.
A specialist takes blood from a person's vein. After the test, it is recommended to eat.
Indications
The test is indicated if there is a suspicion of:
- thyrotoxicosis;
- hypothyroidism;
- diffuse toxic goiter.
It is also prescribed:
- in case of increased or decreased TSH;
- during examination of pregnant women.
Contraindications
It is not recommended to undergo the test immediately after ultrasound, fluorography, radiography, physiotherapy.

- 26 days-2 years – from 9.0 to 16.1;
- 3-8 years – from 6.7 to 16.5;
- 9-10 years – from 9.6 to 14.5;

- 15-17 years – from 8.7 to 13.6;
- 17 years – from 7.7 to 14.2.
Norm for men (pmol/l):
- up to 25 days – from 9.8 to 23.2;
- 26 days-2 years – from 8.7 to 16.2;
- 3-8 years – from 6.7 to 16.5;
- 9-10 years – from 9.7 to 14.2;
- 11-14 years – from 8.4 to 13.0;
- 15-17 years – from 9.5 to 15.0;
- 17 years – from 7.7 to 14.2.
An increase or decrease in the production of triiodothyronine, thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone indicates a violation of the thyroid gland function. Hyperthyroidism - increase in norm, hypothyroidism - decrease.
