Blood test for hormone T3 is a special test that is carried out to measure the level of T3 in human blood.
A T3 blood test is a special test that is performed to measure the level of T3 in a person's blood.

General information

Triiodothyronine is a thyroid hormone, the activity of which exceeds the activity of thyroxine by 3-5 times. T3 and T4 stimulate the development and growth of the body, increase the activity of physical and mental processes.

T3 performs the following functions:

  • increases blood pressure;
  • increases heat production;
  • increases motor activity;
  • accelerates thinking;
  • increases mental activity;
  • accelerates oxygen absorption by all organs except the spleen, testicles and brain;
  • increases the strength and frequency of rhythmic contractions of the heart;
  • stimulate the formation of the kidney hormone - erythropoietin - the formation of red blood cells;
  • stimulate the absorption of proteins.

T3 regulates the rate of oxygen consumption by tissues, enhances catabolism, stimulates protein synthesis, glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, lipolysis and intestinal motor function and removes cholesterol with bile. It also promotes the absorption of vitamin B12 in the intestine and the synthesis of vitamin A, sex hormones and bone growth. Children need it for the development and growth of the central nervous system.

Procedure

Preparation

It is recommended not to eat for three hours. It is necessary to exclude emotional and physical overstrain 24 hours before the study and not to smoke for 2 hours before the study.

Heavy physical activity should be excluded. Do not take medications that may affect thyroid function a month before taking the tests.

T3 hormone blood test procedure

The procedure is carried out on an empty stomach and involves taking a blood sample from a vein.

Indications

The test may be prescribed if:

  • the free T4 norm is low, the TSH level is low;
  • the free thyroxine norm is hyperthyroidism symptoms;
  • asymptomatic increase in T4;
  • deviations from the norm of TSH and T4.

Decoding the test

In a general analysis, the thyroxine norm is in the limit: 1.3-2.7 nmol/l.

The norm of free T4 is 2.3-6.3 pmol/l.

An increase in the level is manifested in iodine deficiency goiter, thyrotoxicosis, thyroid insufficiency, during pregnancy. With an insufficient level of T, there is a high probability of decreased metabolism, hypothyroidism. It should be known that in elderly people, the level of triiodothyronine is significantly reduced, so for them, a blood test for thyroid hormones has special normal values. During pregnancy, T3 decreases from the first to the third trimester. A week after childbirth, the free T3 levels in the serum normalize. Women have lower concentrations of free T3 than men by an average of 5-10%.

Free T3 is characterized by seasonal fluctuations: the maximum level occurs from September to February, the minimum - in the summer.
