Somatotropic hormone is a hormone synthesized by the pituitary gland. The substance is a natural controller of growth and general development of the human body. The normal level of somatotropic hormone is an important characteristic of a child's health, especially before puberty. At this stage, bone tissue and the human skeleton are formed. The pituitary gland is a gland located in the brain that secretes several hormones, each of which is responsible for certain processes occurring in the human body. Up to the age of 20, somatotropic hormone is produced by the pituitary gland in large quantities. It is especially necessary for the correct formation and development of tubular bones. After reaching this age, the amount of hormone produced decreases significantly.

Somatotropic hormone

In addition to controlling growth, somatotropic hormone is also responsible for other functions:

  • stimulates and maintains immunity at the cellular level;
  • normalizes the functioning of the sweat gland system;
  • determines the elasticity of the ligaments;
  • stops the aging process;
  • helps the rectum absorb calcium.

Somatotropic growth hormone

Somatotropic growth hormone is especially important for athletes, or rather its levels in the blood. After all, this substance is able to accelerate metabolic processes in the body, accelerating the burning of fat tissue and promoting muscle growth. For the same reason, this hormone is also very important for women. It helps to stop the aging process, provides a fit and slim figure.

Somatotropic hormone affects metabolic processes as follows:

  • activates protein synthesis, stopping its breakdown;
  • stops fat deposition processes;
  • increases blood glucose levels;
  • reduces the rate of sodium excretion from the body.

Somatotropic hormone: norm

To determine the amount of somatotropic hormone in the body, it is necessary to take a venous blood test. To do this, you need to:

  • 24 hours before the test, avoid fatty foods;
  • 24 hours before the test, stop taking medications (with the consent of the doctor);
  • before the test, avoid physical activity and try not to be nervous;
  • the day before the test, do not eat any food;
  • 3-4 hours before the test, stop smoking cigarettes.

Fluctuations in the level of somatotropic hormone in the body are possible due to any changes, including depending on physical activity or mood. It is best to take the test several times and determine the indicator by the average value. The norm for women ranges from 8 to 10 ng / ml, for men from 2 to 3 ng / ml. For a child, this indicator varies depending on age:

  • For a boy under 3 years old - from 0.43 to 3.03 ng / ml, for a girl under 3 years old - from 0.37 to 2.07 ng / ml.
  • By the age of 19: for a young man - from 0.23 ng / ml to 0.73 ng / ml, for a girl - from 0.83 ng / ml to 4.07 ng / ml.

Somatotropic hormone is elevated

If somatotropic hormone is elevated in a person's body, this can cause serious pathological processes in the body. With an increase in this indicator, the child's growth accelerates, and he becomes significantly taller than his peers. During the process of growing up, with the same elevated level, the following conditions can develop:

  • thickening and compaction of the epidermal layer;
  • increased amount of hair on the body;
  • increased sweating and sebum secretion;
  • clogging of blood vessels with atherosclerotic plaques;
  • insulin dependence;
  • calcium deficiency;
  • failures in the functioning of the nervous system;
  • frequent headaches;
  • epileptic seizures;
  • menstrual irregularities;
  • appetite disorders and insomnia.

The main reason for the increase in the level of the hormone in the blood is considered to be an increase pituitary gland, therefore, to diagnose the pathology, it is recommended to do an MRI. In some cases, the pituitary gland can be enlarged due to genetic changes.

If the level of somatotropic hormone is elevated in the child's blood, this can be the cause of the following disorders:

  • excessive consumption of protein foods;
  • disproportionate physical activity;
  • prolonged fasting;
  • too much sleep;
  • low blood sugar levels;
  • frequent stress.

To reduce somatotropic hormone, a complex of medications is prescribed. Some lower the level of the hormone in the blood, others stop its production by the pituitary gland. If the increase in the substance is a tumor in the brain, surgical intervention is prescribed.

Somatotropic hormone is decreased

A decrease in the level of somatotropic hormone in the blood can cause pathologies, but less serious ones than with an increase. These include:

  • general muscle weakness;
  • overweight;
  • accelerated aging;
  • heart and vascular diseases;
  • decreased sexual activity;
  • depressive states;
  • formation of atherosclerotic plaques.

In children, reduced hormone production leads to:

  • growth retardation;
  • smaller facial features;
  • pale skin;
  • late manifestation of sexual characteristics;
  • poorly developed muscles.

A decrease in the level of somatotropic hormone is possible for a number of reasons:

  • surgical intervention in the brain;
  • radiation;
  • infectious diseases;
  • head injuries;
  • endocrine system disorders.

Conservative methods of medicine are used to increase the hormone in the blood. Medicines can stabilize the amount of hormone in the blood quite quickly and for a long period of time. For children, drugs are used that normalize the thyroid gland and genitals.
