Thyroid peroxidase antibody test is a test that determines the level of autoimmune thyroid disease.
Thyroid peroxidase antibody test is a test that measures the level of autoimmune thyroid disease.

General information

This method determines the presence of specific antibodies to thyroid cells in the blood. They occur if the human immune system recognizes the cells of the gland as a foreign biological substance. This can cause thyroiditis, damage to the gland tissue and all sorts of disruptions in its functioning.

Procedure

Preparation

There is no need to follow any special diet. The person is informed about the need to take a blood sample, and is also warned about the occurrence of some discomfort during the manipulations.

Procedure for analyzing antibodies to thyroid peroxidase

After venipuncture, the material is collected in an empty vessel or in a container containing a separating gel.

To stop bleeding, the venipuncture site is fixed with a cotton ball. If a hematoma occurs in the area of venipuncture, warming compresses are prescribed.

Indications

Main indications:

  • differential diagnostics of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism;
  • goiter;
  • diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism;
  • Graves' disease;
  • ophthalmopathy;
  • pretibial myxedema.

Decoding the analysis

The presence of anti-TPO in the blood indicates an autoimmune attack on the thyroid gland. A high deviation from the norm indicates the likelihood of pathology.

If antibodies to thyroid peroxidase are elevated, but only slightly, there are diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, systemic autoimmune vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus.

A significant deviation from the norm usually indicates the presence of autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland.

In pregnant women, positive indicators indicate the likelihood of hyperthyroidism in the child.

If the study is carried out to monitor the course of treatment, and the antibody level fluctuates, the chosen therapy is ineffective. Most likely, the disease is progressing.

Sometimes the indicators are elevated even in healthy people. This is more common in women. Most of them are not bothered by thyroid diseases, but it is necessary to monitor the health condition.

When the concentration of antibodies decreases, this means that the chosen treatment is effective.
