Determination of aldosterone in the blood is a study during which the mineralocorticoid hormone is detected in the serum of the biomaterial, which is responsible for regulating the water-electrolyte balance.

General information

Aldosterone is a hormone, an indicator of water-salt metabolism in the body. Aldosterone is involved in the regulation of electrolyte concentrations.

This study makes it possible to identify tumors that may be present in the adrenal glands, abnormal neoplasms (growths), and adrenal hyperactivity.

Procedure

Preparation

No special preparation is required. For subsequent tests, the doctor may recommend eating foods with sufficient sodium content for some time (about a month).

Blood aldosterone test procedure

A sample of biomaterial is taken from a vein. It is usually taken standing or lying down. Venipuncture is performed early in the morning, in a lying position. Blood is collected in an empty or gel-filled test tube and immediately sent to the laboratory. Transportation is carried out at a temperature of 2-8 °C. After 4 hours, blood is taken again for testing with the patient standing to determine the effect of motor activity on the blood aldosterone level. The second sample is collected in the same way. The venipuncture site is pressed with a cotton ball until the bleeding stops.

Indications

Indications for taking the aldosterone test:

  • high blood pressure;
  • decreased potassium levels;
  • confirmation of the effectiveness of drug therapy;
  • arterial hypertension;
  • chronic adrenal insufficiency;
  • detection of Conn's syndrome.

Decoding the test

Normal values for men in position:

  • standing (at rest) - from 8 to 172 pg/ml;
  • lying down (after exercise) - from 30 to 355 pg/ml.

Normal values for women:

  • at rest - from 8 to 172 pg/ml;
  • after exercise - from 30 to 355 pg/ml.

Normal values for newborns - from 300 to 1900 pg/ml.

Children from one month to two years - from 20 to 1100 pg/ml.

Children from three to sixteen years - from 12 to 340 pg/ml.

The test results can usually be collected in two to five days.

An elevated level of this substance may indicate Conn's syndrome, kidney, liver and heart disease. A reduced level usually indicates Addison's disease.
