Ultrasound of the spleen is an ultrasound examination procedure that allows you to identify a number of structural and inflammatory changes in the spleen. During the examination, the doctor can establish abnormal changes, pathological growth, which is often associated with certain diseases and infections. Ultrasound of the spleen also allows you to diagnose the presence of neoplasms, exsanguination when twisting the leg, structural changes, suppuration, etc. The study is carried out not only in the presence of painful symptoms, but also as a preventive measure.

Ultrasound of the spleen: the norm

During the examination, the specialist takes into account the shape, outline, sizes, as well as the presence or absence of neoplasms. During this procedure, the lymph nodes and their structure are visualized. All data are compared with standard indicators. But there are discrepancies in these indicators in adults and children.

Spleen: ultrasound dimensions of adults

In a healthy state, the spleen should have its own specific dimensions. If the indicators do not deviate, then there is no reason to worry. This means that the following standards: length - no more than 12 cm, width - about 8 cm, height - from 4 to 5 cm. The outline of the spleen resembles a crescent, located on the left side of the peritoneum from above. The structure should not show seals, a vascular network is allowed. The vein in the spleen - does not exceed 5 mm in diameter.

Ultrasound of the spleen in children: the norm

Considering that the child's body is only growing and developing, accordingly, the indicators should be different from those of adults. For example, in young children, the length should be no more than 5.5 cm, from 1.5 to 2.5 cm - width. In adolescents, in turn, the length varies from 9 cm to a maximum of 12 cm, the width is within 3.5 - 5 cm.

Reasons for conducting an ultrasound of the spleen

It is recommended to conduct an ultrasound of the spleen when:

  • studying the consequences of injuries after blows, knife and gunshot wounds, etc.;
  • infections, including lues, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, septic foci, etc.;
  • chronic liver pathologies (cirrhosis, hepatitis);
  • blood pathologies;
  • suspicion of developmental abnormalities;
  • suspicion of the presence of neoplasms.

Since the study is carried out abdominally, patients with purulent lesions or burns on the examined skin area, application of sound-conducting gel is contraindicated.

Ultrasound of the spleen: preparation

Three days before the examination, it is necessary to avoid foods that activate peristalsis and gas formation. In the evening before the ultrasound session of the spleen, it is recommended to have a light dinner before 18:00. It is contraindicated to eat immediately before the procedure.
