The main parameters that the specialist evaluates during the examination are the size of the gland, its outlines, the condition of the parenchyma, structural features, the presence of neoplasms, their localization. Particular attention is paid to the structure of the head of the organ, the study of compacted fibers in case of edema, the presence of calcifications and a decrease in size during a long-term inflammatory process, the growth of scars, fatty layers, and the compaction and softening of tissues in tumors is taken into account.

Ultrasound of the pancreas: the norm

During diagnostics, the specialist evaluates the shape, structure and dimensions, according to the norm:

  • The contours of the organ should be smooth.
  • During diagnostics, there should be a clear image of the outlines.
  • Length - 14-22 cm, width and thickness no more than 3 cm. The length of the head of the pancreas itself is 2.5-3.5 cm

Ultrasound of the pancreas is recommended for:

  • prolonged painful sensations in the upper abdominal cavity: epigastric zone, left side and hypochondrium;
  • suspected pathology of an organic nature, tumor;
  • pancreatitis and jaundice;
  • changed outlines of the duodenum and stomach, revealed by radiographic method;
  • pathology of the gastric walls, confirmed by fibrogastroduodenoscopy;
  • pain and tension of the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall during palpation;
  • unreasonable weight loss or weight gain;
  • incomplete digestion of food.

Contraindications to ultrasound examination

If the patient has purulent wounds or burns on the skin of the abdomen, the application of a sound-conducting gel is contraindicated. That is, the examination itself is impossible.

Ultrasound of the pancreas: Preparation

Three days before the examination, the patient must refuse food that activates flatulence. The day before the procedure, you must take a laxative, have dinner in the evening, not including milk and foods rich in fiber in the diet. Dinner should take place at least 12 hours before the start of the study.
