Ultrasound of the cervix
Increased thickness of the inner layer can be a symptom of hyperplasia and cancer. Heterogeneity of the muscle layer sometimes also indicates adenomyosis. These changes are not always unambiguous signs of disease, however, they provide grounds for a more detailed study.
Ultrasound of the uterus and appendages
The study is prescribed for diseases, to confirm pregnancy (uterine, ectopic). Enlarged organ sizes indicate a possible pregnancy, fibroids or adenomyosis. Also, ultrasound of the appendages is relevant for heavy bleeding during menstruation, pain and heaviness in the lower abdomen, infertility. If it is necessary to study the development of follicles, diagnostics are prescribed several times during the cycle.
There are two forms of diagnostics: abdominal (the device sensor is applied to the abdominal wall) and vaginal (the sensor is inserted into the vagina). The second type is considered more informative, but less convenient for the patient in terms of the procedure and preparation for it.
Uterine ultrasound: indications
Uterine ultrasound is recommended if the following symptoms are observed:
- irregular menstrual cycle;
- prolonged delay of menstruation;
- pain in the lower abdomen;
- heavy and prolonged (uterine) bleeding during menstruation;
- infertility.
The analysis is also prescribed if the following pathologies are suspected:
- adenomyosis;
- cyst, cystic torsion in the ovaries, polycystic disease;
- inflammatory processes in the fallopian tubes;
- polyps;
- myoma;
- ectopic pregnancy;
- endometritis.
Uterine ultrasound: contraindications
Transabdominal access is contraindicated in patients who have purulent skin lesions or burns on the abdominal skin at the site of application of the sound-conducting gel. The transvaginal method is not used in case of allergy to latex, the presence of the hymen.
Uterine ultrasound: preparation
Abdominal use of the device requires a full bladder, so the patient must drink about a liter of water before the examination. It is recommended to exclude gas-forming products from the diet (3 days in advance). The vaginal method does not require special preparatory measures.
