Thyroid gland: ultrasound
The examination allows to identify defects in the development of the organ, foci inflammation, neoplasms, localize hemorrhages. Despite its high information content, ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland is an additional diagnostic measure, which, along with examination and puncture, helps the endocrinologist make a final diagnosis. In a comprehensive diagnosis, the structural features of the parathyroid formations and adjacent lymph nodes are taken into account.
Indications for thyroid ultrasound
Annual preventive monitoring recommends this study for women who have reached the age of 35, since they are susceptible to diseases of the endocrine system.
This study is recommended for the following symptoms:
- mood swings, nervousness condition;
- subfebrile body temperature;
- feeling of a lump in the throat, desire to cough;
- changes in heart rhythm;
- unreasonable weight gain or sudden weight loss;
- active hair loss;
- trembling in the limbs;
- unclear formations, suspicion of tumor processes.
Contraindications
Application of sound-conducting gel is contraindicated for patients with purulent wounds or burns.
Thyroid ultrasound: norm
There are standard indicators that a specialist is guided by when conducting this study: clear outlines, typical location, length from 4 to 6 cm, width about 1.8 cm, thickness from one and a half to 1.8 cm. The volume of the gland should be proportional to the weight of the patient being examined - from 15 cm3 in a child to 25-32 cm3. in an adult.
Thyroid ultrasound: preparation
No special preparatory measures are required. Immediately before the ultrasound session, the specialist applies a special gel to the area being examined for better sound conductivity during operation of the device.
