General Information

Antibody production against cytomegalovirus (CMV) begins immediately upon infection. These antibodies counteract and minimize infection symptoms. Modern diagnostics detect IgG antibodies in latent, primary, or exacerbated phases. IgM antibodies may indicate primary or recurrent phases.

A blood test identifies antibodies, but a single titer measurement rarely determines the exact infection stage (current or past), as CMV and antibodies can coexist lifelong in an infected person.

A fourfold or greater titer increase suggests an active infection phase.

The presence of antibodies does not guarantee future immunity, due to the immune system’s instability against CMV.

For inconclusive results, retest after 2–3 weeks. A positive result indicates either a current infection or prior exposure.

Transmission occurs through close contact with a carrier—sexually or transplacentally (mother to fetus). Good personal hygiene significantly reduces infection risk.

CMV poses a severe threat to immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV, with a high risk of fatal outcomes in complicated cases.
