The CMV IgM test detects the presence of class M immunoglobulins against the cytomegalovirus infection agent in the body.

General Information

Upon cytomegalovirus (CMV) entry, the immune system undergoes changes. The incubation period ranges from 14 days to 3 months. Immunity becomes unstable and slow, with the virus negatively impacting it.

The body gradually builds a defense, producing IgM and IgG antibodies that lyse (dissolve) the virus within cells, curbing its spread. Detecting IgM antibodies is critical for diagnosis, providing insights into disease forms. An infectious disease specialist can assess whether the illness is acute, a reinfection, superinfection, or reactivation.

IgM antibodies appear in the blood earlier than other classes, decreasing over time but rising during exacerbations.

A positive result indicates either a primary infection or disease exacerbation.

Indications for CMV IgM Testing

Key indications include:

  • Pregnancy planning;
  • Signs of fetoplacental insufficiency;
  • Fever of unknown origin;
  • Infectious mononucleosis.

CMV is especially dangerous for immunocompromised individuals, like those with HIV, potentially leading to fatal outcomes.

Symptoms include retinal, esophageal, or colon inflammation, and neurological disorders (encephalitis).

Risk groups include those with promiscuous sexual activity and pregnant women, where symptoms may be absent or subtle. Testing is mandatory with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, liver, or spleen. For children born to HIV-positive mothers, test if hearing/vision issues, frequent convulsions, or developmental delays are present.

How CMV IgM Test Is Conducted

No special preparation is needed. General guidelines: avoid food, alcohol, and intense exercise beforehand.

A specialist draws venous blood. The patient sits, places their arm on a support, a tourniquet is applied, and they clench/unclench their fist several times. The puncture site is disinfected with alcohol.

Completion Time for CMV IgM Test

Results are typically ready the next day.
