- sharp cutting pain in the groin area and all the way to the lower back;
- a sharp but short-term increase in pressure and temperature;
- nausea;
The presence of such symptoms may indicate that a person has a stone in the ureter and got stuck in the urinary tract. In this case, it may be necessary to remove the stone.
The process of the operation
Preparation
First, preparation is carried out for the removal of stones. This usually includes a week-long course of antibiotics. Then, before the process begins, an antibiotic is administered to prevent the spread of inflammation. Also, before the beginning of the manipulations, the patient must urinate to get rid of urine. In the case of small children, general anesthesia may be required.
The process of removing kidney stones
There are several methods for removing stones from the ureter:
- remote lithotripsy;
- percutaneous nephrolithotomy;
- urethroscopy:
Remote lithotripsy is the crushing of a stone in the ureter using a special device called a lithotripter. This device produces shock magnetic and ultrasound waves that crush the stone into smaller fractions, which then exit the ureter with urine.
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is performed to crush stones larger than two centimeters. First, a tube with a contrast agent is inserted into the kidney through the urethra and ureter. This substance is injected directly into the kidney. Then an incision is made in the lumbar region and a nephroscope is inserted through this incision. A nephroscope is a device with a camera and a light guide. Using a nephroscope, which produces ultrasound waves, the stone is crushed, and then its particles are removed through the incision using medical forceps.
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is necessarily performed under general anesthesia.
Ureteroscopy is performed using a special device, a urethroscope. At the beginning of the procedure, this device is inserted into the urethra and then into the ureter. At the end of the urethroscope there is a camera with an LED, with which the doctor can see the size and location of the stone. Then, using forceps, the stone can be removed from the ureter. However, if the stone is large and it is not possible to remove it with forceps, then it is pre-crushed with a laser.
Rehabilitation period
The rehabilitation period is only a couple of days with a maximum period of up to a week.
