General information
Nephropexy is a surgical operation that involves fixing a mobile kidney to prevent it from lowering when a person is standing.
This surgical intervention is performed in two ways:
- open surgical route;
- laparoscopic procedure.
The open surgical route is considered less popular today, compared to the laparoscopic one, since it is a complex surgical intervention that requires long-term rehabilitation of the patient and significantly longer healing of scars.

Open surgical route. This type of surgery is performed by the doctor cutting the patient's skin and other layers to isolate the kidney for the purpose of fixing it. After fixing the kidney in a physiological position, the doctor cuts out a small piece of muscle tissue, sews one of its ends to the inner part of the kidney capsule, and the second to other tissue bases. Thus, the kidney does not lose its mobile function, but can no longer descend very much.
Laparoscopic nephropexy is currently considered a common minimally invasive surgical method. It is performed by the surgeon making four holes through which he inserts a camera (to display the process on the monitor) and surgical instruments. Then the doctor places several sutures between the renal capsule, abdominal tissue and muscular connective tissue. After removing the instruments, drainage tubes are placed in the place where they are located (in the surgical field) for some time. No stitches are applied, and the wounds heal on their own.
Depending on the type of surgery chosen, the procedure itself lasts 40 - 60 minutes. In extremely severe and complicated cases, the surgery can last for hours.
Rehabilitation period
If the surgery was performed openly, the patient must be under observation in the hospital for at least 21 days, and during the first week after the surgery he must lie with the foot end of the couch raised (up to 25 cm). As a rehabilitation course, in order to avoid possible complications, the patient must be treated with antibiotics, and to exclude possible gas accumulation in the intestines, the patient takes laxatives or is given enemas.
After laparoscopic surgery, the patient's stay in the hospital is usually from 3 to 10 days. In this case, the patient should also lie with the foot end of the couch raised.
On average, it takes three years to restore normal kidney function, but after four months, patients usually notice noticeable improvements.
Indications
Nephropexy is performed if the patient has the following symptoms with nephroptosis (prolapsed kidney):
- acute or chronic pain syndrome in the lower back;
- damage to the renal tubular system (chronic pyelonephritis);
- increased blood pressure (arterial hypertension);
- various disorders in the functioning of the kidney, which leads to a violation of the outflow of urine.
Contraindications
Nephropexy is prohibited if a person has the following pathologies:
- acute inflammatory processes in the body;
- anemia (the operation is performed after the hemoglobin level has normalized);
- disorders in the cardiovascular system;
- worsening of diabetes mellitus, which leads to serious consequences for the entire body.
Complications
Complications may arise after the nephropexy procedure:
- rupture of the fibrous membrane;
- hematoma formations;
- fixation of the kidney very high or very low.
