Preparation
Before this procedure, the necessary preparation is carried out:

The process of performing a kidney biopsy
This procedure is carried out in several stages:
- the patient undresses and lies down on his stomach on a special operating table;
- then the patient is put under local anesthesia;
- the doctor inserts a biopsy needle into the selected area (this is done under the direct control of an ultrasound examination, the patient is asked to hold their breath and not make any movements for some time);
- after taking the kidney tissue, the needle is removed;
- the bleeding is stopped and a special antiseptic is applied bandage.
Rehabilitation period
After this procedure, it is necessary to undergo a rehabilitation course:
- the patient is recommended to stay in bed all day, while drinking plenty of fluids;
- it is forbidden to take any anti-inflammatory drugs;
- during the first two days after the procedure, any physical activity is prohibited;
- for 2 weeks after the biopsy, it is recommended not to lift heavy objects or overexert yourself.
If the event went well, the patient can return home on the same day. If pain occurs, you can use a painkiller.
Indications
A biopsy is performed if:
- severe infectious processes in the urinary tract;
- glomerulonephritis (damage to the glomeruli of the kidneys);
- blood or protein products in the urine;
- abnormalities in the functioning of the transplanted kidney;
- suspicion of tumor formations in the kidney;
- impaired kidney function that is detected using ultrasound diagnostics and computed tomography.
Contraindications
A kidney biopsy is absolutely contraindicated for people with one functioning kidney, with blood clotting disorders, the presence of renal tumors, hydronephrosis, renal tuberculosis and renal artery aneurysm. Relative contraindications to the procedure include the following pathologies: severe hypertension, nephroptosis, abnormal renal mobility, atherosclerosis in the last stages of its development, nodular periarteritis, myeloma.
Complications
Complications after kidney biopsy are very rare, among them it is worth mentioning:
- accumulation of blood in the muscle or kidney;
- infectious inflammation of the skin at the injection site;
- neumothorax;
- rupture of the lower pole of the kidney;
- bleeding as a result of puncturing fairly large blood vessels;
- paranephritis (inflammation of the tissue around the kidney).
If the patient after the procedure, pain in the chest, abdomen or shoulder, severe shortness of breath, profuse bleeding in the injection area, fever, and blood is present in the urine after 24 hours after the biopsy, the patient should immediately consult a doctor.
