Synovial fluid examination is one of the methods for analyzing the condition of joints and bones, which involves examining the specific tissue lining the joints.

General information

Bones are the support of the body, its internal framework. In addition to this function, our skeleton also provides protection to many vital organs.

A general clinical examination (analysis) of joint fluid includes determining the physicochemical properties of the fluid and a microscopic examination of cellular elements.

Most often, a puncture is done on relatively large joints - elbow or knee.

Procedure

Preparation

A consultation with a rheumatologist is necessary. If necessary, sedatives are prescribed.

If it is supposed to determine the glucose content of synovial fluid, the patient should refrain from eating for 6-12 hours before the session.

Synovial fluid test procedure

The skin is treated with surfactant or ethyl alcohol, after some time with povidone-iodine and allowed to dry for 2 minutes. The doctor collects the analyzed material from a large joint using a sterile puncture needle. The procedure is quite unpleasant. Local anesthesia may be used.

Rehabilitation period

It is recommended to use antiseptic drugs and an elastic bandage in the puncture area.

Indications

Indications are:

  • arthritis (after injury, other etiology);
  • osteoarthrosis;
  • excessive accumulation of fluid in the joint.

Decoding the analysis

The specialist pays attention to the color, transparency, quantity, viscosity, pH, presence of mucus and clots. The number of leukocytes and the leukocyte formula are determined.

Reference values:

  • color - colorless;
  • transparency - transparent;
  • protein - no;
  • leukocytes, in 1 μl - < 200;
  • neutrophils, % - < 25.

The most pronounced changes are found in bacterial arthritis. The cell count reaches 50,000-100,000 in 1 μl, of which neutrophils make up more than 80%.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the number of leukocytes increases to 25,000 in 1 μl due to neutrophils (25-90%), the protein content reaches 40-60 g / l.

Prices and clinics
