Vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae infection has significantly reduced the incidence of disease in young children, making it possible to prevent various lesions of vital organs.

General information

Diseases caused by the Haemophilus influenzae bacillus are quite diverse in their clinical manifestations. The most severe of them are purulent meningitis and pneumonia, less serious are acute bronchitis, epiglottitis (inflammation of the epiglottis with edema), sinusitis, mastoiditis, purulent arthritis, heart damage. Young children, mainly those in the first two years of life, are most susceptible. The use of a vaccine against this pathogen has led to a significant decrease in the incidence rate, especially in children's groups.

Process

Mainly 3 types of the drug are used - Act-HIB, Hiberix or combined Pentaxim (contains whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis). Less common (due to the high cost) - Infanrix-Hexa or Hexavac (hepatitis B is also added). Available in individual syringe doses with a needle treated with a special compound to reduce pain.

The vaccine enters the child's body by intramuscular injection into the anterolateral surface of the thigh or into the outer surface of the upper third of the shoulder.

Compatible with other vaccines - DPT, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, except BCG. When administered at the same time, the injection is performed in different areas of the above-mentioned body surfaces.

The vaccination is performed in 4 stages: at 3 months, at 4.5 months, at 6 months. Revaccination is performed at 18 months. If there is a deviation from the calendar after 6 months, two doses with an interval of one month and a repeat at 18 months are sufficient. If the second injection is performed after 12 months, then the third administration is not used.

After one year, a single dose of the vaccine is sufficient. After 6 years, children are able to independently develop immunity to Haemophilus influenzae.

Indications for use

The above-mentioned pathogen circulates mainly in Western Europe, America, affecting mainly children, since it is transmitted by airborne droplets - from a patient or carrier. Due to a significant increase in population migration over the past 20 years, the prevalence of Hib infection has become much wider, capturing the eastern territories.

We cannot ignore the fact that the possibilities of microbiological examination of patients in our country are much lower, therefore, clarification of the cause of the disease in practice rarely occurs, and with the next bronchitis or pneumonia in a child, the parents do not know the type of microbe or virus that caused them. Even if there is information about the existence of a vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae, it is not always clear whether a particular child needs it. In Russia, it became mandatory only in 2011.

In this regard, vaccination is highly recommended:

  • children who are preparing to attend a nursery or kindergarten group;
  • premature babies;
  • those on early artificial feeding, because antibodies with mother's milk are not available to this group;
  • the group of frequently and long-term ill people;
  • in the presence of lymphoma, myeloma, leukemia, organ transplantation, lymphogranulomatosis;
  • frequently traveling to Western countries.

Contraindications

Tetanus toxoid intolerance (the Hib antigen is covalently linked to it) is extremely rare in children.

Preparation

Before vaccination, it is necessary to measure the temperature and undergo an examination by a pediatrician.

Complications and rehabilitation

The vaccine does not contain live microorganisms, but only the antigen, so there is no manifestation of the infectious process after vaccination. It is well tolerated. At the injection site, a lump, redness, soreness, and rarely a temperature reaction may form. It goes away without treatment; in doubtful cases, a consultation with a pediatrician is necessary.

Prices and clinics

Vaccination against hemophilic infection is carried out in the immunoprophylaxis office by a qualified vaccination nurse after consultation with a pediatrician. You can find out the cost of the consultation and service on the portal .
