The musculoskeletal system, like other systems, is in a state of dynamic physiological restructuring throughout a person’s life under the influence of external and internal factors. Unfortunately, as a result of the prevalence of destruction processes over synthesis processes in bone tissue in old age, a very dangerous disease can develop over time - osteoporosis, which in Latin means "porous bone".

General information

Osteoporosis, the treatment of which is difficult due to the absence of obvious symptoms in the early stages, must be prevented by preventive measures.

Risk factors that can be influenced are:

  • sedentary lifestyle;
  • low levels of vitamin D and calcium in the body;
  • bad habits.
It follows that caring for the health of the musculoskeletal system should begin with physical activity; walks in the fresh air in sunny weather to get enough vitamin D; eating foods rich in calcium; restrictions on alcohol and smoking.

The following are factors that cannot be influenced, but should serve as a signal for timely treatment at a medical institution:

  • age over 65 years;
  • hereditary predisposition;
  • postmenopausal period in women.

Procedure

Generally accepted methods of combating the disease, recommended by WHO:

  • hormone replacement therapy;
  • prescribing bisphosphonates;
  • taking calcitonin;
  • puncture vertebroplasty.

Treatment of osteoporosis in women can be carried out using the hormone estrogen in combination with progestin. Estrogen helps to increase the density of bone structures. Progestin is prescribed to prevent the development of cancer in the uterus, which can be caused by estrogen taken alone. Hormones are available in the form of tablets or patches for sticking to the skin. This type of therapy is considered effective even for patients over seventy years old.

In cases where hormonal drugs are contraindicated for a woman, she is prescribed the protein calcitonin. It compacts the bone structure and reduces the risk of their fractures. This protein cannot be taken orally, since it is digested in the gastrointestinal tract. It is prescribed in the form of injections or a nasal spray.

Bisphosphonates, actively used to strengthen hard tissue, are derivatives of bisphosphonic acids. Their action is based on reducing the activity of osteoclasts - multinucleated cells that destroy bone tissue. The drugs are prescribed to reduce the risk of spinal and hip fractures.

Surgical methods are recommended in extreme cases. They are used for compression injuries of the vertebral bodies and when non-invasive treatment is ineffective, when the risk of a compression fracture exceeds 25%.

Puncture vertebroplasty is widely used as a minimally invasive method of intervention in pathological processes. To strengthen the hard tissue of the vertebra, bone cement is used, which is injected using a puncture needle. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia for 20-40 minutes. And after three to four hours the patient can leave the medical facility on his own.

Indications

You should see a doctor if you have the following symptoms of osteoporosis:

  • the structures that form the body's skeleton break even with minor loads on the supporting apparatus;
  • episodic back pain;
  • a decrease in the length of the spine by more than one centimeter per year (with a norm of three millimeters);
  • observed deformation of the spine and stooped posture.

Contraindications

Contraindications for puncture vertebroplasty include compression of the spinal cord, infectious and allergic diseases.

Complications

Hormonal therapy can entail side effects, manifested as dysfunctions of the intestine, pain syndromes behind the sternum, hypertension.

When taking bisphosphonates, gastrointestinal disorders can develop.

The consequences of minimally invasive interventions are rarely negative, but their share of complications with such manipulations still occurs. It is associated, mainly, with violations of the procedure technique. Among the negative effects are the following: spinal cord compression, radiculopathy and pulmonary embolism.

Prices and clinics

If signs of illness appear, you should contact your therapist, who will advise which specialist will deal with further appointments. Since the disease associated with bone density disorder is a multifaceted problem, its treatment is carried out by different specialists: endocrinologist, orthopedist, traumatologist, rheumatologist, surgeon, etc. For more detailed information, visit the website .
