Lacrimal duct lavage. Prices, reviews, ratings
General information
Rinsing the lacrimal ducts is used for two main purposes - to diagnose the condition of these organs and to resolve the problem of their blockage. On the one hand, diagnostic lacrimal duct washing can provide an idea of the cause of excessive or insufficient tear secretion for the usual level. At the same time, an antibiotic or antiseptic can be administered during washing, and the inflammation focus is treated in this way.
Lavishing the lacrimal ducts in infants is associated with the problem of infant dacryocystitis (blockage of the canals with a gelatin plug), and as a consequence, their poor development after the birth of the child.
As a rule, this gelatin plug dissolves itself shortly after the baby is born. Otherwise, the first step is to massage the lacrimal duct by the parents themselves, carried out immediately after each feeding. And if this method fails, lacrimal duct washing is used in infants. This procedure is unpleasant for the child, but very effective. It is done almost immediately after probing, which allows us to count on success and elimination of the problem.
Procedure
Preparation
This procedure uses local anesthesia - a special agent is instilled into the conjunctival cavity. The patient should sit with his head slightly tilted. No special preparation is required before the procedure itself.
Lacrimal duct irrigation procedure
The ophthalmologist inserts a cannula (metal catheter) through the lacrimal point, which was placed on a syringe. The cannula is inserted as deeply as possible, then pulled back so that it does not rest against the walls of the lacrimal canal. Under slight pressure, the rinsing fluid from the syringe is injected into the canal. In the case of free flow of fluid from the nose, the doctor diagnoses a normal condition of the canal, whereas a difficult exit, the need for more pressure, the exit of fluid through the same lacrimal point or the opposite one (immediately or after a short period of time) is diagnosed as one or another deviation. When antibiotics or disinfectants are introduced into the canal, the canal is cleaned and accumulated secretions are removed, which can become a source of inflammation.
Indications
As a diagnostic method, lacrimal duct lavage is used when the patient complains of impaired lacrimation.
As a treatment method, this procedure is carried out in the following cases:
- dacryocystitis (blockage or underdevelopment of the canal) in newborns when massage of the lacrimal canals is ineffective;
- stenosis, that is, narrowing of the canals;
- corneal ulcer - to combat the source of infectious inflammation;
- canaculitis - that is, inflammation of the canals themselves. This method is used after removing the source of inflammation.
Contraindications
There are two main contraindications for this procedure:
- dropsy of the lacrimal sac, called hydrops;
- acute purulent inflammation, in which it is not possible to outline its specific boundaries - this diagnosis is called phlegmon.
Complications
With the correct technique, this procedure does not carry the risk of complications. But if the cannula was inserted all the way and not retracted before the introduction of the rinsing fluid, an erroneous test of this diagnostic and treatment procedure may occur.
Prices and clinics
This procedure is performed exclusively by an experienced ophthalmologist. This method of diagnosis and treatment is not as dangerous in terms of complications as rigid probing, but requires the specialist's accuracy.
Attempts to perform it on your own (and, oddly enough, they happen) are fraught with serious injuries to both the tear ducts and the eye.
The cost of the procedure depends on the location of the clinic. It is performed quite often and there should be no problems finding a specialist. For a convenient search for the best ophthalmologist, use the website .
