Laser vision correction – changing the curvature of the cornea using a laser beam to focus light rays on the retina.
Laser vision correction – changing the curvature of the cornea using a laser beam to focus light rays on the retina.

General information

During the operation, those layers of the cornea that deform its shape and prevent the focusing of light rays evaporate. This operation improves the refractive quality of the cornea, that is, the ability to refract light rays. As a result of the operation, the light is focused on the retina.

Methodology and technologies

The most common laser correction technologies are the so-called PRK and LASIK. The methods of their surgical intervention differ from each other and are intended for the treatment of various forms of pathologies.

The PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) technology works with the outer side of the cornea, correcting the shape in its natural position. LASIK requires preliminary surgical intervention, in which the inner layer of the cornea is cut and folded back, and only then the laser acts.

PRK is used for myopic astigmatism and, in fact, myopathy. LASIK – for most other pathologies.

Procedure

Preparation

Since this procedure is a surgical intervention, preparation for it has a number of stages and features:

  • A full diagnostics of the patient's vision should be carried out.
  • Based on the diagnostic results, if necessary, an operation to strengthen the tissues should be performed.
  • A complete blood count should be taken.
  • Two weeks before the operation, you should stop using contact lenses. Makeup is excluded on the day of the operation. You should have sunglasses with you. Clothing should be made of cotton fabric, preferably with an unbuttoned collar.
  • Two days before the operation, exclude any alcoholic beverages and alcohol-containing medications.

The process of laser vision correction

The PRK method acts directly on the cornea. The recovery period is from 1 to 3 days. When operating on both eyes, the pause between surgical interventions should be at least a week.

The LASIK method, as a more universal one, is also recognized as more modern and reliable.

The operation takes place in several stages:

  • A layer of about a third of the cornea's thickness is separated from the cornea with a surgical instrument and folded back. The patient is under local anesthesia and does not feel pain.
  • The laser affects the inner layers of the cornea. Excess tissue evaporates, the surface is smoothed.
  • Then the removed layer of the cornea is returned to its place, where it almost immediately begins to grow back.

The second method has a serious drawback, namely, the risk of complications is greater than with PRK.

Rehabilitation period

The process of photorefractive keratectomy takes 1-3 days, and is quite unpleasant. With LASIK, the rehabilitation period is shorter - it will take only about a day to restore vision.

After the surgery, you must not:

  • wash your hair;
  • touch your eyes with your hands;
  • drink alcohol;
  • allow bright rays of light to enter your eyes.

Indications

Laser vision correction is indicated for mixed astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia.

Contraindications

Rapidly progressing hyperopia and myopia, as well as cataracts and glaucoma are the main contraindications. In addition, this operation is contraindicated for people with autoimmune and infectious diseases, diabetes, pregnant and nursing mothers. The operation is complicated if the patient has a very thin cornea.

Complications

When using LASIK technology, due to the fact that the intervention is deeper, the list of possible complications is quite extensive. We are talking аbout:

  • turning the edge of the flap;
  • ingrowth of epithelium under the flap;
  • glare and halos around light sources at night;
  • displacement and other types of flap deformation.

Prices and clinics

Laser vision correction receives favorable reviews only in cases where a very experienced specialist takes on the case. Prices for this service vary depending on the clinic, but the treatment method and technological equipment of the medical center are also important. The site provides a list of clinics that perform laser vision correction.
