Treatment of astigmatism is the elimination of a vision defect due to which a person cannot clearly see objects of the surrounding reality.
Treatment of astigmatism is the elimination of a vision defect due to which a person cannot clearly see objects of the surrounding reality.

General information

Astigmatism is a defect of the human visual system that occurs as a result of the irregular shape of certain eye structures. Astigmatism can be associated with an irregular shape of the lens, eyeball or cornea. This vision problem is associated with incorrect focusing of light rays on the surface of the retina. Due to uneven curvature or shape defects of certain parts of the eye, light is not refracted as it should be to obtain a clear picture. Instead, the picture is blurred either entirely or partially. With astigmatism, there is a blurring of either horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines, which remain as if outside the field of focus.

In fact, astigmatism is a fairly common phenomenon, since the shape and ratio of all eye structures is rarely ideal. But when the level of astigmatism does not exceed 0.5 diopters, it is a threat to vision and is considered the norm of development.

Methodology and technology

Methods of treating astigmatism are reduced to three main methods:

  • wearing special lenses and glasses;
  • surgical procedure (currently almost never used due to comparatively low efficiency);
  • laser correction.

At the moment, the third option is considered the most optimal, effective and safe, that is, laser correction of the shape of the cornea.

Glasses for correcting astigmatism should be cylindrical in shape, differing in the level of curvature of the horizontal and vertical planes. Since astigmatism is often combined with myopia or hyperopia, glasses and lenses for correcting these pathologies have combined properties.

Procedure

Preparation

Astigmatism is diagnosed by an ophthalmologist with a shadow test through a dilated pupil. The most popular procedure aimed at combating astigmatism is the LASIK laser correction method, which does not require special preparation, is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia in the form of special drops.

Treatment of astigmatism

During the procedure, a flap of the upper layer of the cornea is removed. The laser affects its deeper areas, giving them the shape individually required for each specific case. The flap is then returned to its place, no stitches are required.

Rehabilitation period

The effect of the operation becomes noticeable within one to two hours, because the light rays fall on the retina at a new angle, focusing in a normal way. The new level of vision is established within a week. Complex rehabilitation is not required.

Such a complex visual disorder as amblyopia requires the same complex and individual approach.

Indications

Astigmatism causes the following disorders:

  • deterioration of vision;
  • blurring of the observed picture;
  • headache;
  • stinging in the eye area.

With these symptoms and the doctor's conclusion, treatment procedures are prescribed.

Contraindications

Visual correction using excimer laser technology (LASIK) is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • during pregnancy and postpartum breastfeeding;
  • with glaucoma;
  • with any form of cataract;
  • in severe cases of diabetes;
  • with changes in the fundus;
  • with corneal dystrophy.

Complications

Possible complications are associated with improper engraftment of the flap of the upper layer of the cornea. Astigmatism itself is dangerous due to complications, especially if it manifests itself at an early age. Because the eyes do not work at full capacity, the part of the brain also gradually loses the habit of working and a pathology called amblyopia occurs.

Who performs it and where?

The procedure for treating astigmatism is carried out in ophthalmological clinics, and the price of the procedure will depend on their level of technical equipment, and most importantly, the method of vision correction.
