Cataract treatment is a complex process, for which there are several methods, including surgical and laser correction.

General information

Cataract is an eye disease characterized by clouding of the lens, threatening partial or even complete loss of vision. Sometimes cataracts can accompany other diseases, for example, they can be a consequence of diabetes.

Such a serious disease is treated with different methods, among which two should be highlighted:

  • drug (also called conservative) treatment;
  • surgical intervention.

It should be remembered that vision loss with cataracts occurs only if the clouding has affected the central part of the lens. If it has affected its periphery, there will be no symptoms for quite a long time. Therefore, it is recommended to undergo preventive diagnostics.

Cataracts are diagnosed by examining the fundus, as well as by a number of procedures that are included in the comprehensive vision diagnostics.

Methodology and technology

Drug treatment of cataracts is based on the use of special drugs, most often in the form of eye drops. But this method is ineffective and serves only as an auxiliary tool designed to stop the development of the disease (which in most cases can last quite a long time - 6-10 years, although sometimes cataracts progress much faster or slower).

There are cases when cataracts resolved. But such episodes are very few, and all of them occurred only at the earliest stage of the disease. In the treatment of cataracts of the eye, only the surgical method can give a good result. Laser treatment of cataracts is considered the most effective. During the operation, the lens that has become unusable turns into an emulsion, which can be easily removed from the eye. Therefore, cataract surgery is nothing more than lens replacement.

Procedure

Preparation

The operation to remove the old lens is called phacoemulsification. The level of reliability of this procedure is so high that it is performed on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia is administered, so significant preparation is not needed at all, and vision begins to recover literally on the operating table.

Phacoemulsification process

First, the surgeon makes a very small incision through which a special device is inserted that emits an ultrasonic signal. This signal destroys the old lens, turning it into an emulsion. It is easily removed from the eye. Using an injector, after the emulsion is removed from the lens cavity, a lens based on acrylic materials is inserted through the same incision. It is flexible enough and has a crystalline memory.

The incision does not require stitches and is sealed independently. All stages of the operation are monitored by a special computer.

Rehabilitation process

The operation under local anesthesia (no injections are required, the anesthetic is instilled into the eye) lasts about a quarter of an hour, is painless. The patient goes home the same day, the rhythm of life is practically not disturbed. The recovery period is from one and a half to two months. During this period, it is especially necessary to take care of the eyes and follow the doctor's instructions. A successful operation does not cause complications.

Indications

Cataract is diagnosed through a thorough examination, but its symptoms are as follows:

  • decreased vision;
  • the pupil may become grayish or even acquire a yellowish tint;
  • increased sensitivity of the eyes to light;
  • increased (or appearance) myopia;
  • change in color perception.

Contraindications

Contraindications for this procedure are as follows:

  • any inflammatory processes in the eye;
  • eye infections;
  • oncological diseases of this type areas.

Prices and clinics

This procedure is the most popular way to combat cataracts, and therefore it is performed in most clinics. The price for treating cataracts using this procedure depends on the location of the clinic and its technical equipment.
