Vision diagnostics is a set of procedures aimed at assessing the patient’s vision, identifying diseases and hidden pathologies.

General information

Vision diagnostics is necessary to identify the causes of certain vision problems, make an accurate diagnosis and choose the correct and optimal course of treatment. Comprehensive diagnostics will help to identify the true cause of vision problems, since many eye diseases have similar symptoms, but require completely different and, most importantly, timely treatment.

Comprehensive vision diagnostics includes checking the following parameters:

  • determining the refraction of the eye;
  • measuring the length of the eye and the depth of its cornea;
  • measuring visual acuity;
  • changes in the retina and the state of the optic nerve;
  • checking intraocular pressure;
  • checking the visual field.

This involves identifying pathologies hidden from superficial examination and performing an ultrasound of the internal structures of the eyeball.

Methodology and technology

The most modern and reliable method of comprehensive vision diagnostics is computer diagnostics. It allows many procedures to be carried out in a contactless manner. The following technologies are used for this:

  • slit lamp – for measuring the anterior segment of the eye;
  • device for non-contact examination of eye refraction;
  • non-contact tonometer – a device for measuring pressure inside the eye;
  • device for measuring the field of vision;
  • laser biometry device, measuring the physical parameters of the eyeball, for example, the length of the axis of the eye.

There are a large number of diagnostic devices, but they are all aimed at one thing – identifying vision diseases.

Procedure

Preparation

First of all, there is a conversation with the doctor, during which it is important to determine whether the vision problem is concomitant with any other disease, for example, a chronic infection or diabetes. We will also talk about heredity, which can affect certain indicators. No special preparation is needed before visiting an ophthalmologist.

Vision diagnostic procedure

Vision diagnostics begins with traditional test tables. Then the characteristics of the cornea and the refraction of the eye are determined. After that, the intraocular pressure is determined, and the patient's field of vision is checked. With the help of a special microscope, the eyelashes, eyelids, cornea and other anterior parts of the eyes are examined. Through the dilated pupil, a picture of the state of the fundus is obtained. Each stage of comprehensive vision diagnostics is aimed at analyzing the work and condition of all components of the eye. This analysis forms a comprehensive, complete picture of the state of the eyes, on the basis of which an experienced ophthalmologist can draw a conclusion about the level of health of the patient's vision, make the correct diagnosis and prescribe this or that treatment.

Particular attention should be paid to the diagnosis of children with visual impairment. A rapidly growing child's body is especially sensitive, so timely diagnostics now will help save the child from problems in the future.

Rehabilitation period

The procedure is painless, does not pose a risk of complications, lasts 40-50 minutes, after which the patient does not need a rehabilitation period.

Indications

A set of diagnostic procedures is performed in case of vision loss, darkening of the visible area, narrowing of the field of vision and other problems. In addition, a preventive examination is recommended every one to three years, depending on the patient's age.

Contraindications

Comprehensive diagnostics are contraindicated in the following cases:

  • mental disorders;
  • state of alcohol or drug intoxication.

The diagnostic procedure itself reveals contraindications for certain operations.

Prices and clinics

Comprehensive vision diagnostics are performed by many clinics that work with the necessary equipment and experienced ophthalmologists. Prices vary depending on the number of diagnostic stages and the technical level of the equipment.
