Shock wave therapy (SWT) is a relatively new method of influencing body tissues, which is aimed at alleviating the condition in various lesions of the musculoskeletal system. The procedure is used as an alternative to surgical interventions and long courses of NSAID injections. During its implementation, shock waves are sent to the area of the body that is the focus of the disease using a SWT device. These are infrasonic pulses that can stimulate tissue regeneration and microcirculation. Due to this, the patient's blood circulation increases, pain decreases, enzymes are absorbed, salts are removed, and healing is accelerated.

Shock wave therapy: indications

Initially, the method ESWT was used for emergency care of athletes who had suffered serious injuries (bruises, fractures) and diseases of the musculoskeletal system due to their professional activities. It was used for sprains, muscle strains, and cardiological disorders. Today, the ESWT device is successfully used not only for treatment, but also for preventive purposes. The range of its use has also increased significantly - these are diseases of the spine and joints, urological disorders, orthopedics, neurology and even cosmetology.

Indications for the procedure are the presence of the following diagnoses:

  • Heel spur;
  • Arthrosis in the initial form, synovitis, arthritis;
  • Osteochondrosis, herniated discs;
  • Coccyx injuries;
  • Epicondylitis;
  • Scapulohumeral periarthritis;
  • Tears of muscles, tendons, ligaments;
  • Spasms, muscle strains;
  • Osteochondropathy;
  • Curvatures spine;
  • Prostatitis;
  • Flat feet.

SWT is also widely used for rehabilitation after fractures, prosthetics, to get rid of cellulite, trophic ulcers.

Shock wave therapy: contraindications

It is worth noting that the SWT procedure can bring not only benefits, but also harm to health. Therefore, before carrying it out, the doctor carefully examines the patient's medical history and, if necessary, sends him for additional tests.

Temporary contraindications include:

  • Pregnancy;
  • Acute infections;
  • Patient age under 17 years;
  • Deformation of the musculoskeletal system, in which it is impossible to act on the area of the body using the shock wave therapy device.

Absolute contraindications include:

  • Impaired blood clotting;
  • Diseases of the nervous system;
  • Irregular heart rhythm;
  • Thrombosis;
  • Oncological diseases;
  • Pacemaker installed.

It is prohibited to apply ESWT to the lungs, intestines, brain and spinal cord, and major vessels.

Shock wave therapy treatment

As mentioned earlier, the effect on tissues is performed using shock waves of a certain frequency and pressure. The procedure itself is simple and painless for the patient. For good conductivity, a special gel is first applied to the skin. After that, the specialist sets the required parameters on the ESWT device (which are selected individually in accordance with the type of disease and the patient's condition) and works on the area of the body for a specific period of time.

Immediately after ESWT, the patient's microcirculation improves, metabolism accelerates, muscles relax, pain and spasms disappear. With regular therapy, tissue regeneration is enhanced, blood supply and joint mobility are restored, salts are removed from the body and blood flow is activated.

The effectiveness of the procedure has been proven by clinical trials. It is especially effective in the diagnosis of heel spurs, arthrosis at an early stage and arthritis in the remission phase or fading exacerbation. With complex treatment (which includes shock wave therapy, massages, drug therapy and exercise therapy), the disease is cured in 90% of cases.

Shock wave therapy device

The first shock wave therapy device was developed in Switzerland. Today, they are also manufactured in Germany, Belgium, Great Britain and the Netherlands. There are both compact portable models and large stationary units. They are necessarily equipped with a screen, control panel, metal case and wave emitter. Other functions may vary. Some models are equipped with several attachments for different types of therapy. Two handles allow you to simultaneously treat two zones. Built-in treatment programs eliminate the need to set up settings.

Shock wave therapy: reviews

The main advantage of ESWT is the possibility of outpatient treatment. The patient does not need to be hospitalized and disrupt their usual rhythm of life. For such therapy, it is enough to come to a session several times a week, which takes no more than 15 minutes. The number of sessions depends on the degree of tissue damage, the type and duration of the disease. ESWT does not require the use of anesthesia. The impulses created by the device do not affect healthy tissue and do not harm them. The method is an excellent alternative to surgery and, if all the rules are followed, gives only positive results.
