General information

Paraffin therapy is a physiotherapeutic procedure, the essence of which consists in the use of applications of specially purified paraffin. It has been proven that paraffin has high heat capacity and low thermal conductivity, which allows it to be used with great success in medical practice. Paraffin heated to a certain temperature helps to increase blood circulation, resolve local inflammation, and enhance metabolic processes.

Medical purified white paraffin does not contain chemicals that penetrate the human body, so its use has a local effect.

Procedure

Preparation

A consultation with a physiotherapist is required. After the diagnosis has been made and all necessary tests have been carried out, a course of treatment is prescribed.

Paraffin treatment

There are several types of paraffin application:

  • Layering: applying several layers of melted paraffin with a flat brush with increasing temperature on each layer.
  • Paraffin baths: used to treat hands or feet, which are first coated with paraffin and immersed in a container filled with warm paraffin.
  • Napkin-application method, in which special napkins are soaked in paraffin and applied to a specific area of the body.
  • Cuvette-application method: paraffin is poured into special cuvettes. When it hardens but remains soft, apply to the selected areas of the body.

When using all methods except paraffin baths, also apply a warm blanket or wadded jacket.

The duration of the session ranges from 30 to 60 minutes.

Rehabilitation period

After the session, the patient is advised to rest for 30-60 minutes.

Indications

The technique is recommended in the following cases:

  • poorly healing wounds;
  • trophic ulcers;
  • pathologies of the musculoskeletal system;
  • pathological conditions of internal organs;
  • consequences poliomyelitis;
  • skin diseases;
  • joint diseases;
  • pathologies of the peripheral nervous system;
  • cosmetology indications.

Contraindications

It is not recommended to use therapy in case of:

  • acute inflammatory diseases;
  • neoplasms;
  • blood diseases;
  • blood clotting disorders;
  • circulatory failure;
  • hypertension;
  • liver cirrhosis;
  • nephritis;
  • endocrine pathologies systems;
  • mental illnesses;
  • pregnancy.

Complications

As a rule, no consequences are observed.
