Inhalation therapy is a technique that is carried out through the use of medicinal aerosols, electroaerosols, essential oils, plant extracts for preventive and therapeutic purposes.

General information

The effectiveness of the method is based on the ability of volatile fractions of the drugs to penetrate deep into the mucous membranes of the nasopharynx, larynx, trachea and accumulate in the submucosal layer of the respiratory tract, and from there through the lymphatic and vascular plexuses enter the general bloodstream and spread throughout the body. The body's reaction to drugs with such manipulation is extremely fast and is second only to intravenous administration.

In medicine, I use several types of nebulizers:

  • Dosed liquid for using liquid products.
  • Dosed powder - used in treatment with products in the form of dry powder.
  • Steam - indispensable for the treatment of pathologies of the external nose, its cavity and pharynx, as it generates steam containing large particles.
  • Ultrasonic generates small particles, therefore it is effective for all types of diseases, used for viscous suspensions.
  • Compression - generates particles of various sizes, therefore it is considered a universal device.

The technique does not harm other organs, which is achieved by the targeted effect of vapors on the respiratory tract, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, liver.

Procedure

Preparation

Allergy tests are prescribed: a test for sensitivity to antibiotics or pharmacological tests for bronchodilators are performed.

Inhalation can only be performed 1-1.5 hours after smoking, eating, or physical activity.

Inhalation therapy

There are four main ways to use aerosols in medicine:

  • Intrapulmonary - used for pathologies of the bronchi, lungs, nasopharynx. Implies the effect of drugs directly on the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and the epithelium of the lungs.
  • Transpulmonary - used to administer antibiotics, diuretics, hormones for the purpose of systemic action on the body. The products are absorbed by the body through the alveoli and mucous membranes.
  • Extrapulmonary – used to treat burns, wounds on the skin surface, infectious and bacterial tissue damage, and fungal infections by spraying directly onto the lesion.
  • Parapulmonary – involves treating objects and air with aerosols in the form of disinfection and disinfestation.

The person is in a sitting position, leaning back on the back of a chair or couch. It is important that the shoulders, chest, and stomach are relaxed. A deep breath is taken through the mouthpiece or mask through the mouth or nose. After a short pause, exhale.

Inhalation of seriously ill patients or children is carried out in a semi-recumbent position, lying down, and only through a mask that should cover the nose and mouth. It is important to ensure that it fits tightly to prevent steam from getting into the eyes.

Rehabilitation period

After inhalation therapy, the patient should remain indoors for 15 minutes in the summer and 30 minutes in the winter. Smoking is prohibited for 3 hours after the procedure.

Indications

The technique is prescribed for the following pathologies:

  • acute respiratory diseases (tracheitis, laryngitis, rhinitis) and their complications;
  • pneumonia;
  • pulmonary tuberculosis;
  • acute or purulent bronchitis;
  • exacerbations of chronic and obstructive bronchitis;
  • fungal infections.

As a preventive method, it is prescribed for HIV infection, and as a rehabilitation method - after thoracic surgery.

Contraindications

Such manipulations are not performed in case of pulmonary hemorrhage, cardiac arrhythmia and severe failure, pneumothorax and bullous emphysema. Individual intolerance to drugs is also taken into account.

Complications

After the procedure, slight dizziness, cough due to irritation of the mucous membranes, headache, some allergic reactions due to intolerance to drugs, plant extracts may be observed.
