Toxoplasma gondii – a protozoan bacterium causing toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasma gondii – a protozoan bacterium causing toxoplasmosis.

General Information

Its entire life cycle occurs within host cells (98% in cats). At the end of development, parasites are excreted into the environment via feces. Oocysts are resilient, surviving adverse conditions until reaching an intermediate host (humans, cattle, rodents).

Main transmission routes:

  • Eating raw or undercooked meat/mince;
  • Neglecting hygiene during pet contact;
  • Transplacental.

It’s not transmitted person-to-person, as toxoplasma isn’t present in the body. As a TORCH infection, it can cause premature birth or fetal death. Infection risk is 10-15%, but neurological and physical developmental issues occur if contracted in the first trimester. Comprehensive testing months before conception enables preventive and therapeutic measures.

For diagnosis, specialists order lab tests. A threefold increase in IgM antibody titers indicates the pathogen’s presence. Rising IgG levels suggest early-stage toxoplasmosis.

A pediatrician, gynecologist, or infectious disease specialist may order the test. If no IgM antibodies are in serum, vaccination is needed.

Indications for Toxoplasmosis IgM Testing

Testing is critical for:

  • Pregnancy screening;
  • Suspected intrauterine infection;
  • Encephalitis, HIV, neoplastic diseases;
  • Unexplained fever, chills, temperature spikes;
  • Suspected congenital toxoplasmosis in infants.
Laboratory diagnostics, via specific biochemical reactions, detect class M antibodies produced against Toxoplasma gondii.

How Is Toxoplasmosis IgM Testing Conducted?

To avoid factors skewing results:

  • Draw blood fasting in the morning;
  • Rest 15+ minutes prior;
  • No food, medications, alcohol, or nicotine 12 hours before;
  • Avoid physical exertion.

A tourniquet is applied to the forearm, a sterile needle punctures the vein, blood is collected, and an alcohol-soaked cotton pad is applied. Venous samples are tested using a test system.
