General Information

In adults, toxoplasmosis is nearly asymptomatic, requiring no special treatment or prevention. Toxoplasma gondii is pathogenetically significant for immunocompromised individuals, especially those with HIV. It’s classified as a TORCH infection. Primary infection in the first trimester of pregnancy may lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.

IgG antibodies are produced 2-4 weeks post-infection and persist lifelong. The disease has three forms: acute, latent, chronic. Transmission routes:

  • Transplacental (mother to child via placenta);
  • Consuming raw or undercooked meat;
  • Unwashed hands.

It’s not transmitted person-to-person. Result interpretation depends on reference values: negative – below 1 IU/mL, positive – above 3 IU/mL, doubtful – intermediate. Results may be skewed in immunocompromised individuals.

Indications for Toxoplasmosis IgG Testing

Testing is recommended for:

  • Pregnancy planning;
  • Prevention with chronic hepatitis, encephalitis, myocarditis;
  • Unexplained rashes;
  • Secondary immunodeficiency with retinal, lung, CNS, or septic involvement;
  • Routine newborn screenings.
Antibodies and bacteria form a complex that neutralizes over time. Vaccination is needed if no IgM or IgG antibodies are present in blood serum.

A general practitioner or infectious disease specialist orders the test.

How Is Toxoplasmosis IgG Testing Conducted?

For accurate results:

  • Draw blood fasting in the morning;
  • Last meal at least 8 hours prior;
  • Avoid medications (vitamins, supplements) for 14 days;
  • Avoid spicy, fried, fatty foods and smoking 24 hours prior;
  • Avoid exertion.

In the lab, rest for 20 minutes. A nurse applies a tourniquet, performs the puncture, and collects the sample, then applies an alcohol-soaked cotton pad.

Completion Time for Toxoplasmosis IgG Testing

Results are ready in 4-6 days.
