General Information

Primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can lead to infectious mononucleosis, causing tonsil inflammation, blood composition changes, liver and spleen enlargement, nasal congestion, and fever.

Transmission occurs via contact or airborne routes, rarely through blood transfusion. Once in the body, the virus remains latent, activating under negative factors like weakened immunity, colds, hypothermia, or stress. Reactivation occurs only with severe diseases.

Diagnosis involves:

  • Medical history collection;
  • Hemogram;
  • Immunofluorescence antibody testing;
  • PCR (using saliva or blood);
  • Liver and lymph node ultrasound.

IgG-class antibodies develop 2-3 weeks post-EBV entry, accumulating to provide lifelong immunity. Their concentration varies with risk factors.

Detecting IgG antibodies indicates past infection without current illness. High IgG titers against EA confirm chronic infection.

EBV may cause lymphoma (a rare cancer form).

A positive antibody result doesn’t always indicate EBV; it could be rubella or toxoplasmosis.

False results may occur in children under 2 or within days of infection.

Indications for Epstein-Barr Virus IgG Testing

For planned conception, gynecologists recommend women undergo comprehensive infection screening. Though not a TORCH infection (posing no fetal development risk, preterm birth, or anomalies), preventive and therapeutic measures are beneficial. Other indications include:

  • Confirming mononucleosis diagnosis;
  • Frequent tonsillitis;
  • Therapy efficacy assessment;
  • Disease stage determination;
  • Lymph node enlargement;
  • Unexplained abdominal pain;
  • Rashes, especially perioral.

How EBV IgG Blood Testing Is Conducted

Testing occurs mornings on an empty stomach, with the last meal 8-10 hours prior; fluids are allowed. Avoid salty, spicy, fried foods, alcohol, nicotine, medications, and heavy labor for 24 hours.

Rest 10-15 minutes beforehand. The specialist disinfects the puncture site, applies a rubber tourniquet, and draws blood. A спирт-soaked cotton swab stops bleeding. Patients may resume normal activities post-procedure.

Turnaround Time for Epstein-Barr Virus IgG Testing
