General Information
Herpes may be latent or present cold-like symptoms. If fever, temperature rise, lymph node enlargement, or tonsillitis emerge after 5-7 weeks, EBV has caused infectious mononucleosis. Typically, it resolves in weeks without complications, though fatal cases are known.
Serological diagnosis detects IgM and IgG antibodies to antigens, detailing the disease stage. Antigens in the blood are recognized as foreign, triggering immunoglobulin production. Blood serum is used for analysis. IgM appears in the initial stage and persists lifelong, peaking at week 6 post-infection and declining by week 8.
Women with mononucleosis during pregnancy bear healthy children; EBV doesn’t adversely affect fetal development, miscarriage, or preterm birth.
No drugs block the pathogen’s replication; symptom relief is the only treatment during activation.
Indications for Epstein-Barr Virus IgM Testing
A pediatrician, therapist, or infectious disease specialist orders the test. For family planning, comprehensive herpes screening is advised, with treatment/prevention for positive results. Other indications include unexplained lymph node enlargement, frequent tonsillitis, and perioral dermatological issues.
How EBV IgM Blood Testing Is Conducted
Blood is drawn on an empty stomach mornings, with no food 4 hours prior; medications, supplements, vitamins, and heavy exertion should be avoided. Rest 20-25 minutes beforehand. The specialist draws venous blood, disinfecting the site and applying a tourniquet. A cotton swab stops bleeding.
Turnaround Time for Epstein-Barr Virus IgM Testing
Results are ready in 2-3 days, interpreted by the treating physician.
