Proteins participate in transporting drug components to organ systems, biological and chemical processes in the body, and the transfer of beneficial substances. They play a key role in blood clotting, maintain constant blood pH, and provide immunity against various infections. Proteins balance the proportional ratio of blood’s main components, ensure its viscous structure, and support normal cardiovascular function.

Indications for Total Protein Blood Testing

Total protein blood testing is a biochemical analysis. It is ordered for diarrhea with dehydration, autoimmune disorders, and any infectious diseases.

Testing is recommended at least twice a year and after every infectious or somatic illness.

Total protein levels are assessed during the diagnosis of:

  • Impaired liver and kidney function;
  • Extensive burns;
  • Nutrient metabolism disorders;
  • Infectious diseases;
  • Water-salt imbalance.

After reviewing the results, the attending physician determines the disease stage and, if necessary, prescribes further treatment.

Hypoproteinemia (low protein concentration) is diagnosed in general pathological processes: fevers, chronic bleeding, hepatitis, intoxication. Hyperproteinemia (high levels) progresses with conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, cirrhosis, and myeloma. Its development is also influenced by medications containing bromsulfalein.

How Total Protein Blood Testing Is Conducted

Preliminary preparation is required. The biomaterial is collected from a vein. The puncture site is treated with a cotton pad soaked in a medical antiseptic solution before and after collection, with a tourniquet applied above the elbow. The procedure is conducted in the morning on an empty stomach. Avoid overeating the day before; the last meal should be 6-8 hours prior. Refrain from smoking one hour before and from alcohol one day before. Avoid tea, juice, coffee, and chewing gum the day before; clean water is allowed.

Factors affecting results:

  • Medication use;
  • Physical exertion;
  • Third trimester of pregnancy;
  • Breastfeeding.

Reference values:

  • 46-73 g/L (children under 1 year);
  • 61-75 g/L (1-4 years);
  • 58-76 g/L (8-15 years);
  • 65-85 g/L (adults 16-60 years);
  • 63-83 g/L (over 60 years).
