General (clinical) urinalysis is a laboratory examination of biological fluid conducted for preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic purposes. Urine contains metabolic products (salts and organic substances), the content and concentration of which reflect the body’s overall condition and allow early detection of diseases.
What is General Urinalysis
The examination includes several key parameters:
Organoleptic analysis – studying color, odor, foaminess, and transparency. Since a single sample cannot determine daily diuresis, its specific gravity is assessed.
Physicochemical parameters – density and acidity. Protein presence and concentration are biochemical characteristics. Microbiological analysis and sediment study, including cylindruria, are performed under a microscope.
Other parameters detected include ketone bodies, bile pigments, red and white blood cells, epithelial cells, glucose, and other blood components and inorganic substances. This lab test is one of the most informative, enabling assessment of internal organ condition and early disease detection.
Indications for General Urinalysis
It is ordered for preventive and diagnostic purposes by therapists, pediatricians, endocrinologists, surgeons, or oncologists. It is mandatory during routine check-ups (for children and adults), for pregnant women, and before surgical interventions.
How General Urinalysis Is Conducted
Preparation
Morning urine (120-200 mL) is required for the test. Before collection, perform hygiene procedures on the perineal area without soap: women and children should wipe the area with a cotton swab, men should clean the urethral area. Then dry with a clean cloth.
Plastic containers from the lab or pharmacy can be used for the sample. Alternatively, a thoroughly washed or sterilized glass jar (100-200 mL) with a tight lid is suitable.
The collection container must be thoroughly washed and dried, or results may be distorted.
Before the procedure, refrain from medications, topical treatments (creams, ointments), and alcohol. Testing is not performed during menstruation.
Collecting Biological Fluid
Adults collect urine directly into the prepared container. For infants, line the inside of a diaper with plastic film and cotton; after urination, squeeze the cotton into the container.
The biomaterial cannot be stored for more than 2 hours or transported at subzero temperatures, as sediment may form.
Turnaround Time for General Urinalysis
The sample is processed on the day of submission, with results available the next day.
