What is the Nechiporenko Urine Test
Pathology is identified by counting formed elements per 1 ml of fluid. Normally, a man’s urine should contain no more than 2000 leukocytes, and a woman’s no more than 4000. The norm for erythrocytes (no more than 1000) and cylinders (no more than 20) is the same for both sexes.
The test is highly informative and quick to perform, making it widely used in diagnostic and practical medicine.
A high concentration of leukocytes may indicate an inflammatory process in the renal pelvis, urethra, ureters, kidneys, or bladder.
Serious abnormalities in various parts and organs of the urinary system can be diagnosed by the number of erythrocytes.
If the disease affects internal kidney tissues, the presence of cylinders will be noted.
Indications for Nechiporenko Urine Testing
Indications include prior blood and urine test results showing high concentrations of leukocytes or erythrocytes, or a small number of cylinders.
During an initial examination, a nephrologist may order the test to diagnose various inflammatory processes. The doctor refers the patient for testing if conditions like cystitis, glomerulonephritis, prostatitis, hematuria, pyelonephritis, or kidney stones are suspected.
How the Nechiporenko Urine Test Is Performed
Preparation
For 24 hours before collection, exclude from the diet foods affecting urine color (beets, carrots), as well as meat, sweets, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and honey. Discontinue certain medications: diuretics, metronidazole, rifampicin.
It’s best to purchase a sterile container from a pharmacy, which requires no washing or drying. A small glass jar with a tight lid is also suitable, washed with baking soda and sterilized.
Immediately before collection, thoroughly wash the genital area and dry it with a clean towel to avoid epithelial cells contaminating the sample.
The test is not performed during menstruation. If necessary, insert a tampon into the vagina.
Collection
The midstream portion of morning urine is collected after waking. Collect the portion remaining after 1-2 seconds of initial and final urination into the container. 50-120 ml is sufficient, to be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours.
Processing Time for Nechiporenko Urine Test
The test is conducted in a laboratory. The technician thoroughly mixes the sample, takes up to 10 ml into a separate flask, and centrifuges it for 3 minutes. The supernatant is removed, and the sediment is placed in a special chamber. After separately counting erythrocytes, leukocytes, and cylinders, a conclusion is drawn.
Results can be obtained the day after submitting the sample.
