Indications for Blood Glucose Testing
Low glucose levels cause rapid heartbeat, persistent hunger, chills, excitability, and irritability, seen in adrenal/stomach cancer, hyperplasia, prostate adenoma, hypothyroidism, and poisoning (alcohol, drugs, medications, arsenic).
Testing assesses vital organ function during sports and monitors conditions like:
- Type I/II diabetes;
- Endocrine disorders;
- Cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis;
- Pancreatic tumors;
- Kidney/liver diseases;
- Stroke, myocardial infarction;
- Unexplained retinopathy/neuropathy;
- Elevated urinary sugar.
How Blood Glucose Testing Is Conducted
Three main methods:
- Fasting;
- 2 hours post-meal;
- Random.
For fasting, capillary blood is drawn, followed by 75g sugar in warm liquid (usually tea), with results compared. Post-meal testing occurs ~2 hours after eating (norm ≤6.1 mmol/L). Random and post-meal tests confirm/refute fasting results.
Blood is taken from a finger or vein; venous levels are higher than capillary.
Turnaround Time
Results are available within a day.
